NEW TUG
AUCKLAND HARBOUR BOARD. AUTHORITY TO BE SOUGHT. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, December 12. Statutory authority is to be sought by the Auckland Harbour Board for the borrowing of £41,000 for the purchase of a new tug. The decision was reached when the report of a special committee set up to consider the provision of a second tug for the port of Auckland was adopted by the board. The new boat is to be a twin screw and its length not greater than 125 feet. It will be equipped with engines of 1500 horse power. Tenders will be called in Great Britain.
The setting up of a special committee by the board to inquire fully into the provision of another tug was the immediate result of delay in the berthing of the Strathaird on November 23. The opinion was freely expressed that at least two tugs were necessary to assist in the berthing of large vessels. It was stated that four tugs were customarily used in Sydney for handling vessels of the Strathaird’s size.
The estimated cost of the new tug of the dimensions and horsepower required was about £30,000 in Great Britain. To this had to be added £7500 for exchange and £2500 for the cost of bringing the vessel to Auckland, making a total of £40,000.
