SCOUT NOTES

CUB AFTERNOON. (By "Pathfinder.”) Last Saturday afternoon the Gladstone and East Invercargill packs met at Thomson’s Bush. Twenty-six boys were present and had a very enjoyable time. After a game of hide-and-seek came a flag raiding game in which the defenders, East Cubs, held their den succesfully. Deer-stalking in the long grass proved very exciting, quite a number of hunters killing the deer. A stroll in the shade of the trees hunting for certain leaves and sticks was followed by a trail which led to a very useful and timely treasure, a big bag of sweets. These were soon consumed, along with a large bag of cherries a cub thoughtfully brought along, before finishing the afternoon in the usual cub way. Melbourne Jamboree. The New Zealand jamboree contingent comprises 241 of all ranks. They have been organized into headquarters staff and troops called Hapus. North Island hapus are “Tuis,” “Kiwis,” “Kererus,” “Rurus” and “Wekas.” The Canterbury-Nelson and the OtagoSouthland tribes are yet unnamed, but the two Rover hapus are called the “Maos” and the “Kakas.” The Southland representatives number 11. The scouts are in the OtagoSouthland hapu and are as follows: J. E. McLean, F. Narbey, of Makarewa Troop; H. N. Longley, St. Peter’s; J. W. Wesney, Otautau; F. W. Hall-Jones, Gladstone, and Scouter A. Lumsden, of East Invercargill, who has been appointed assistant scoutmaster of this tribe. The other Southland members of the contingent are in the South Island Rover Hapu, the “Kakas.” They are as follows: Scoutmaster A. F. Hill (Otautau), Cubmaster G. W. Alington (East Invercargill), Rover Scout G. A. Johnston (St. Peter’s), Assistant Cubmaster G. H. Lee (Makarewa) and Scoutmaster B. G. Wallace, of St. Peter’s Troop. The Maheno, which sails at 11 p.m. on Monday, December 17, will carry most of the South Island contingent, and three other vessels will be taking the North Island one. The South Islanders returning on the Maheno will arrive back on January 17. Commissioner Cooksey, who is in charge of the New Zealand contingent, will be travelling over by the same vessel as the Southlanders. Send Off to Jamboree Scouts. All Scouts are reminded that a special bus has been engaged to convey all those who are going to see the Maheno off at Bluff on Monday next. The bus will pick up scouts as follows commencing at 7 p.m.: St. Paul’s, at the church; Gladstone, at their hall; East Invercargill, at corner Gala street and Elies road; St. Mary’s, at the school; St. Peter’s, at the hall. Any other troops desiring to go may join in at any of the above stopping places. Weather permitting.it is hoped to have a camp fire send off at Bluff. There will be a big crowd of scouters and scouts from northern cities and it is up to Southland to give them a good send off from the final port in New Zealand. The bus will return after departure of the Maheno so that at least three hours will be spent at Bluff. Streamers will be obtainable at Bluff from Scouters. Leaders’ Camp. Will all those who are attending Leaders’ Camp at Christmas please advise Scouter Wilson immediately as the camp fee 30/- is now due. Please note that the day of departure for camp is Boxing Day. Meet at railway station, Invercargill, with full kit at 8.30 a.m. The camp ends on Saturday, January 5, 1935. Duke’s Visit. A district parade of all local scouts and cubs will be held on Thursday, January 10, 1935, at 7 p.m., at the entrance gates to the Rose Gardens, Gala street. All ranks are advised to brighten up their uniforms for this parade which is being held for inspection and rehearsal prior to the Royal visit on Saturday, January 12, 1935. Special excursion trains will be running from country districts. Scouts and cubs on holiday will be able to come in and join their troops and packs on the Saturday. The time of parade for this day will be officially advertised.
