TOWN BEAT CENTRAL A. AND C. GRADE MATCHES. There was a very full programme of tennis matches on Saturday when bright sunshine again prevailed. In addition to A and C grade inter-club matches there was a representative fixture between Central District and Town, while friendly matches against Town teams were played at Riverton and Thornbury. The Town B grade representatives beat Central District by 16 sets to 8. In A grade the winning teams were Waihopai, Southend, Invercargill A and St. Mary’s. In C grade wins were registered by Tisbury, Makarewa, Waikiwi, Southend, Moana and Rugby Park. A GRADE. SOUTHEND v. CENTRAL. The defeat of Central by Southend by the substantial margin of 11 sets to 5 came as a surprise, though it was realized that the young Southend side was a force to be reckoned with. For the first time for many years the Central women had to lower their colours in the singles, three of which were annexed by Southend, including a 7—6 win by Miss Lamont from Miss Guest. TOWN v. CENTRAL DISTRICT. The first of the two annual matches between the Central District and Town B grade representatives was played on the Gladstone courts, Town winning by 16 sets to 8 after play of a very fair standard had been witnessed. The men’s doubles was the only department in which the visitors proved superior but most of the individual matches in the other sections were closely contested. In the past the Central women have more than held their own but this year Town appear to be stronger in this department. Robson and Mclvor, the top Town men, had comfortable wins in their singles but the remainder had to fight hard, two succumbing.
