Riccarton apprentice H. Mackinnon will pilot Gaysome in the Bledisloe Handicap at Trentham on Saturday next.

The centre of the S.R.C’s. course proper was firm and fast for horses extended to racing pace on Saturday morning, while the weather was very fine.

The Smuggler and Signaller opened proceedings with an eight'-furlong task in which the former was always galloping well to finish first in lmin 48 2-ssec.

Honest Maid and Toreador were out in company and sprinted home speedily, the latter giving indications of returning to racing form.

Venite scored narrowly from Euge over five furlongs covered in 1.4 4-5. Both displayed freedom of movement, but the former was not all out.

Looking sturdy and bright Clatter was associated with Valiska over five furlongs and the pair raced to the wire stoutly making 1.5 1-5.

. Red Treasure and Night Sail, the juveniles from Rorke’s Drift Lodge, galloped five furlongs, the former filly scoring easily in 1.6.

Orderwood and Young Sentinel jumped away from the six furlong post, with the first-named- leading to the winning-post in 1.19 2-5.

Double Shot and First Song were associated over threequarters of a mile and finished on terms, the last five furlongs being run in 1.5.

The speedy but temperamental Rorke’s Drift Lodge novice, Gipsy Fair, was extended by herself and was not all out to cover five furlongs in 1.4.

Galloping on the inside Cough held a slight advantage from All Humbug when F. W. Ellis’s pupils ran down six furlongs well in 1.17 3-5.

Irish Birdcatcher broke away in the di» near the seven furlongs and was galloping fast up the back to complete the last five furlongs in 1.5 2-5.

Piloted by her trainer J. A. Rowland, Enwood was treated to a nice pipe-opener from the half-mile mark to glide home in 50 4-ssec.

Thornton cantered to the mile post and set off to pick Johnny, Golden Lap and Bowlands at six furlongs, beating them home under pressure in 1.47 1-5— a useful effort.

Mr G. M. Currie’s great brood mare, Eulogy, was buried beside Absurd, with whom she made the trip to New Zealand from England, and with whom she was mated five times to produce Humbug (sire of Mr W. Bird’s local galloper All Humbug), Epitaph, Homage, and Eulalie.

Proclaimed in the North Island to be a promising youngster colt, Corroboree is by Lord Quex (imp. and son of Lemberg) from Table Talk (dam of High Faluting and the ill-fated Round Table), by Finland from War Scare, by Martian from Gossip (dam of Bobrikoff), by Wallace.

Several offers have been circulated in Australia to induce owners to send good horses to race in California and Mexico and liberal expenses have been held out. In the meantime there does not appear to have been a response in the Commonwealth. The game is not as easy as it looks, when recent events are summed up.

On several occasions of late remarks have been made in print as to G. Murray Aynsley’s two fillies, Orris and Chidden, failing to come up to expectations as gallopers. As a matter of fact both are useful movers, but' in the writer’s opinion both will make good when seasoned. They have never been noted for precocity and present the appearance of two growing and welldeveloped youthful thoroughbreds. Time will tell, where the daughters of Paladin (imp.) from Orange Blossom and Reproachful respectively are concerned.

J. T. Jamieson has moved into his recently purchased stables in Botany street, Randwick. They are those from which R. O’Connor trained for many years, but to accommodate Jamieson’s large team it has been necessary to erect several new boxes. J. M. Jamieson, who was recently granted a permit by the A.J.C., is a son of J. T. Jamieson, and will be in charge of King March, Persian and Carrickore at the coming Auckland Cup meeting.

Aucklanders will be curious to see the Ellerslie-trained gelding Kelby tried out in select company at the A.R.C. Summer fixture, as he is considered to be equal to racing well in open or classic event company. His breeding is interesting, as he is a son of imported English horse Kilbroney, while his dam, Joy Queen, is by Romeo (imp. and son of Flying Fox) from Thumley, by Thurnham (imp.) from Lira, by Cyrenian (St. Simon brand) from Anna, by Musket from Florin, by Traducer from Rupee (imp.), by Dollar. With promising galloping displays to his credit and a family tree of this character Kelby presents the essentials for a more than useful racehorse.

Maoriland’s Racing Clubs in many instances continue to monkey with wagering systems, instead of reducing the price of totalisator tickets to a fiveshilling basis or even less, adopting win and place methods, and fighting for their rights in a country which has legalized the totalisator and declared bookmaking and starting price betting unlawful while encouraging underground wagering to the detriment of the turf. The Government is discovered in an anomalous position by collecting income tax returns from pronounced layers of the odds operating in defiance to the laws of the land. But to returrf to racing clubs tinkering with betting systems. The Stratford Racing Club has decided on the following betting systems for the New Year meeting:—“The win machine will be retained, but the place machine will operate on the two dividend system, on the basis 75—25. where there are five or more starters.”

An Auckland Star writer points out that no fewer than four different betting systems will be used at the coming holiday race meetings in New Zealand. Some clubs will have the single pool, with two dividends of 75 and 25 per cent. Others will use the single pool with three dividends 70, 20 and 10 per cent. Then others again will employ the win and place method, with one pool for a win and one for a place, with 33 1-3 per cent, for each of the placed horses. The Stratford Racing Club is first in the field with a fourth system, namely one pool for a win and one for two dividends, 75 and 25 per cent. Permission to clubs to adopt this method was given by the Racing Conference last July. Unless the committee at its next meeting on December 19 decides otherwise, the Auckland Trotting Club will revert to the single pool, with two dividends, for its Christmas carnival. Win and place was used in October, but that was in the nature of an experiment for the one meeting. The Auckland Racing Club is adhering to the single pool, with two dividends.

The two-year-old Kotou (7.13) who was defeated by the seasoned Round Up (8.4) by a short head, in the Nursery Handicap (5f.) at Woodville J.C. meeting on Saturday, can be classed as a smart female galloper by Night Raid (imp.), a fact of interest in many quarters, where the feminine members of the English horse’s progeny are not held in the same respect as the colts. Kotou is the first foal of Courtesy, by Limond from Homage, by Asburd from Eulogy (imp.), by Cicero, and this descent , demonstrates her classification as from' the very best of winning strains. She is trained by F. Davis, at Woodville, for Mr T. H. Lowry, on whose behalf the well-known mentor will Shortly produce Haut Monde, perhaps to-day. The latter is a colt by Lord Quex (imp.) from d’Oro, by All Black from Amarius, by Maltster from Aurous, by Wallace (son of Carbine) from Aura, by Richmond from Instep (imp.). The colt is a half-brother to the speedy filly Coronilla, by Chief Ruler. It may be mentioned that the colt’s dam, d’Oro, is a full sister to champion mare Desert Gold and the Southland sire Nigger Minstrel, also to Egypt (a successful sire). RACING AT FORBURY. TEMPESTS FORM. (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, December 8 At a meeting of the Board of the New Zealand Trotting Association the report of the Judicial Committee of the Forbury Park Trotting Club which held an inquiry into the running of Tempest in the President’s Handicap on November 22 was received. The committee found that the driving of Tempest was unsatisfactory, but there was • insufficient evidence to support any charge of “pulling” the horse. The board referred the report to the Licensing Committee. The Forbury Club’s stipendiary steward, Mr F. J. Beer, in Ids accompanying report, stated that the race as driven by J. Fraser, the driver of Tempest, was in his mind either bad driving or meant that he was not trying to win. Mr G. J. Bartom the owner of Tempest, stated that there was not money enough in Dunedin to have made him pull the horse up, and the race had satisfied him that Fraser did not drive a good race. WRESTLING LURICH v. SINGH. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 6.30 pm.) Sydney, December 9. In a wrestling bout Tom Lurich defeated Harban Singh by two falls to one;

GOLF. SARAZEN AT WELLINGTON. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, December 9. Sarazen appeared in an exhibition match at the Hutt links to-day. Partnered by A .J. In a singles in the afternoon Sarazen beat Shaw three and one, going out in 36 and returning in 35. SARAZEN’S RECORD ROUND. (Per United Press Association.) Wanganui, December 9. Gene Sarazen broke the official record for the Belmont course on Saturday when the crack American golfer was matched in a four-ball match with the New Zealand open and professional, champion, A. J. Shaw, the pair playing against the New Zealand amateur champion, B. M. Silk, and the runnerup, J. P. Mortland. Sarazen, who dominated the game, went round in 68, two strokes better than the course record, and that in spite of the fact that the ground was hard and dry, making it very difficult to judge the strength of approach shots. Furthermore Sarazen was a complete stranger to the course. His journey out in 33 included three birdies and an eagle three at the seventh, and he came home in par figures except for a birdie three at the seventeenth. The match actually finished at the fifteenth where the proI fessionals won five and three. Of the other players Silk returned

the best card. He did eighteen holes in 77 and played steady golf throughout. His driving was particularly good. Mortland was not playing with confidence and took 79 for the journey. He holed some long putts and an approach 'shot but bogey figures were not of much avail against an opponent who was only over par figures at one hole. Shaw did an 80 (41 and 39). He had bad luck with some of his putts. LAKES CHAMPIONSHIP. WIN FOR CRAIG WOOD. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 7.5 p.m.) Melbourne, December 9. The Lakes open golf championship was won by Craig Wood, of America, who, in the last round, established a course record of 67, five under par. Other noteworthy rounds were Shute 68 and Laffoon 68. W. Bolger, .who was a co-leader yesterday, disappointed today. Ferrier gained the honour of being the leading amateur. The leaders’ scores were:
