Herr Heger was greeted with whistling and shouts of “We want Furtwaengler. This caused a lengthy delay in opening the performance. The Berlin correspondent ot _ me Times says that Herr Rosenberg in an article in the Beobachter shows that Dr Furtwaengler unforgivably offended by conducting the first performance of Hindemith’s “Mathis the Painter, causing a violent conflict behind the scenes, after which he spiritedly defended Hindemith’s artistry. , Herr Rosenberg condemns Hindemiths association with Jews and also says that he is tawdrilly imitating German music. Herr Rosenberg declares that Dr Furtwaengler’s defence of Hindemith shows that he does not sympathize with the Nazi struggle.
