ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES

YOUNG MAN KILLED. (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, December 6. Stewart Wason, aged 17, of Russell’s Flat, was pinned underneath and killed when a truck overturned in the Hawkins riverbed near Darfield early this morning. There were ten young men and girls in the truck and all were returning from a dance at Springfield in a heavy fog. Two others suffered minor injury. The driver was C. King, of Annat. Wason was sitting on the outside of the truck and clung on as it went over, SHUNTERS INJURED. (Per United Press Association.) Hamilton, December 6. As a result of a collision at Frankton Junction early this morning two shunters were injured, Nelson Polglase, aged 44, married, receiving internal injuries, and Frank Wingham, aged 38, single, a lacerated leg. A goods train was being made up at the time and the shunters were riding on the cowcatcher of the engine which was pushing the waggons to join the main train. In the darkness a miscalculation as to the proximity was made, the waggons crashing into a stationary rake of trucks and a waggon was crushed back against the engine on top of the shunters. The men were removed from the wreckage with some difficulty. SHUNTER’S DEATH FROM INJURIES. (Per United Press Association.) Hamilton, December 6. Nelson Polglase, a shunter, who was seriously injured in a shunting accident at Frankton early this morning, died this afternoon. A NARROW ESCAPE. (Per United Press Association.) Tauranga, December 4. A well-known local resident, Charles Haua, was walking across the harbour railway bridge shortly after six o’clock last evening when he saw a train approaching. He clambered down and hung on to a girder, but being unable to retain his hold he dropped into the harbour. The accident was observed from the shore and two boats put out. The first held him up till the second arrived, and he was then hauled on board unconscious. He was then taken ashore. Haua was brought round and removed to hospital. His condition this morning was unsatisfactory. YOUNG WOMAN’S DEATH. (Per United Press Association.) Masterton, December 6. Gwenda Mary Fuge, aged 17, of Kaiwaiwa, was found hanging in a shed on her father’s farm this afternoon. Deceased is reported to have been in indifferent health lately.
