REQUEST TO DUKE
“PUT OUT YOUR CIGARETTE.” EXPLANATION BY FIREMAN. (United Press Assn.— Telegraph Copyright.) Brisbane, December 5. It now appears that not only the Duke of Gloucester but also Sir Littleton Groom and other guests at the citizens’ ball at Toowoomba were warned against smoking. The official explanation was that the fireman who gave the warning was merely carrying out official instructions. Fireman J. G. Patterson, who spoke to the Duke, subsequently stated: We were given • instructions to take every possible precaution against fire. The deputy-superintendent told me not to allow anyone to smoke even if it was the Duke himself. In the supper-room people began to smoke and I spoke to them. They all replied, If the Duke can smoke why can’t we?’ When I reached the Duke at the table I touched him on'the shoulder and said, ‘Your Royal Highness I have to do it because it is my duty. I must request you to put- out your cigarette.’ I certainly did not say: ‘Put out that cigarette, your Worship.’ ”
