The Waikouaiti was to leave Sydney yesterday for Port Kembla. Melbourne and Bluff. She is due here on December 13 and sails the following day for Dunedin. Cabled advice has been received by the C. and D. Line that its motor ship Port Fairy (en route from London, left Suva last Friday for Dunedin, where she is due to-day. She will later complete discharge at Lyttelton. The Union Company has received advice that owing to the waterfront strike at Calcutta, its chartered steamer Narbada has been delayed there. No advice has been received as to when it is expected to dispatch the vessel, which was fixed to leave Calcutta yesterday for Penang, Singaporeand Samarang to complete loading for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Timaru, Dunedin and Bluff. Tne British India steamer Querimba was also to leave Calcutta for Australia and Auckland, and she, too, will be delayed. The Shaw, Savill liner Mataroa, which Is due at Auckland on Thursday morning from London and Southampton, will now complete discharge at Wellington before commencing her Homeward loading at Auckland. The vessel is due at Wellington on December 10, and will leave again on December 12 for Auckland to load. She will later complete at New Plymouth, Picton, Wellington and Lyttelton. The Mataroa is due back at Wellington on December 23, and is to clear Lyttelton finally on January 4 for Southampton and London, via the Panama Canal. The steamer Treherbert arrived at Auckland from Barren Islands, near Madagascar, on Friday afternoon and berthed at King's Wharf to unload 5200 tons of guano to the
agency of A. S. Paterson and Company, Limited. She is to sail toward the end of this week for Wanganui to unload the remainder of the cargo, about 800 tons. The vessel sailed from Barren Islands on October 29. Strong north-east weather was experienced during the first week of the voyage, but afterward the conditions improved and were fine in the Tasman Sea. THE LONG HORIZON. Yonder the long horizon lies, and there by night and day The old ships draw to home again, the young ships sail away; And come I may, but go I must, and if men ask you why, You may put the blame on the stars and the sun, and the white road and the sky! —Gerald Gould. THE CUSTOM OF TIPPING. When considering a total sum you intend to allow for tipping on the voyage, the best course is to set aside ten per cent of the passage money. This amount has to be split up among the stewards with whom you come in contact, and naturally you will give the major portion to those who have given you the most personal service. Thus, a man would give about one-third of the total' gratuity to his bedroom steward, whereas a woman travelling alone should divide this proportion between her steward and stewardess. The table steward would have another one-third and the remainder might be divided between bath steward and "boots,” and perhaps also the deck and public-room stewards would be remembered. Apart from the principle of tipping for services rendered, these proportions as a rule work out satisfactorily, because the stewards in the last category obviously come into touch with a greater number of passengers than the others.—From an English shipping monthly.
