TENNIS CONTEST

AUSTRALIAN STATES TRIANGULAR FIXTURE BEGINS TURNBULL DEFEATS CRAWFORD (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright ) (Rec. 11.35 p.m.) Melbourne, Dec. 5. The defeat of Hopman, the Victorian captain, in two straight sets by Bromwich, a 16-year-old player, was a feature of the Inter-state tennis matches which began at the Albert ground to-day. Kooyong is still under water. Hopman was no match for Bromwich’s baseline play. In the first and second sets Hopman adopted the usual net attack, taking an early lead. Bromwich then pinned him to the baseline, winning easily. It is the first time these players had met. Crawford did not have his own way, though he won in straight sets, Kay making an impressive showing.

A senior inter-state team never contained more young players than the present New South Wales side. Bromwich is 16, Gilchrist 15 and Haxley 16, the average age of the team being 21. Among the women Miss Coyne is 16, Miss Chew 17 and Miss Rice 18.

This week’s contest is triangular, South Australia being the third side. A feature of the matches against South Australia was the defeat of Crawford by Don Turnbull, 4—6, 6—3, 6—3. Quist defeated Bromwich 6—3, 6—o. Turnbull and Crawford, members of the Davis Cup team, fought a great battle. Turnbull’s performance was magnificent as Crawford’s game was up to the form by which he defeated Perry at Sydney on Saturday. Results:— Victoria v. New South Wales. Men’s Singles.—J.
