CART IN CATHEDRAL

PICTURESQUE FESTIVAL. A feature of the Hampshire Agricultural Festival in Winchester Cathedral a few weeks ago was the introduction of a cart, draped in green and stocked with farm produce, which was drawn into the church and up to the central aisle by students from the County Council Farm Institute. The girl students were in two groups, one wearing brown smocks, breeches, stockings and shoes, and the other, a “dairymaid” costume of green dresses with white caps and aprons; while the men and boys wore brown overalls. These students formed part of a procession to which further colour was contributed by the banners of the friendly societies and the symbolic favours worn in their buttonholes by the representatives of the old agricultural societies, these including sprigs of heather, hops, ears of wheat and barley, oak and strawberry leaves, and wisps of wool. . Another feature of the service, at which the Bishop of Winchester was the preacher, was the singing of a Hymn of the Hampshire Countryside specially composed for the festival.
