RETURNED SOLDIERS

THE GORE ASSOCIATION. The fortnightly meeting of the Gore Returned Soldiers’ Association was held on Tuesday evening, Mr L. Roberts presiding over the following members: Messrs M. Green, W. D. Shelton, T. Rusbridge, A. L. McDowell, J. McDonald, A. C. Steel, C. M. Wilson, F. M. Murray, E. J. Columb and G. L. Gerken (secretary). Before the commencement of the business the president moved a vote of condolence and sympathy with Mr J. C. Richardson in the loss of his wife.

The hospital visiting sub-committee reported on its visits to the sick members during the past fortnight. On the first Sunday three were visited at the hospital. One recovered sufficiently to gain his discharge during the ensuing week, but another was admitted, leaving three again to be visited on the second Sunday. Messrs Green and Paterson were appointed a visiting committee for the next term.

The secretary reported that the financial membership now stood at 345, as against 335 last meeting night and 322 at the corresponding period last year. The Commissioner of Pensions, Wellington, wrote in reply to an application from the Gore association that the War Pensions Board had decided to increase the disablement pension of a district ex-soldier from 10/- weekly to 30/- weekly for a period of 12 months from October 1, 1934. The general secretary, Wellington, forwarded the financial membership ladder of all New Zealand associations as at Octobei- 31. Gore occupied twelfth position with 302 financial members. In the inter-island competition, the North Island led with 56 associations and 11,079 members, against the South Island’s 17 associations and 6981 members. • , In two cases of distress, the treasurer was instructed to pay sums of £2 and £3 respectively from the relief of distress funds.

The president reported that an anonymous farmer had offered 20 geese towards the Christmas cheer provisions.
