OBITUARY

MR JAMES A. HAMILTON.

PROMINENT BLUFF RESIDENT.

(From Our Correspondent.)

By the death of Mr James A. Hamilton, J.P., which occurred at his residence, Foyle street, Bluff, yesterday afternoon, the town lost one of its leading citizens, and one who was held in the highest esteem. He had been ailing for some time, and his death was not unexpected. The late Mr Hamilton, who was born in Bluff 54 years ago, was the eldest son of the late Mr and Mrs Alexander McCausland Hamilton. After being educated in New Zealand he entered Trinity College, Dublin, where for five years he studied for the medical profession. In his final year, however, he gave up the idea of becoming a doctor, and later came back to the Dominion. Returning to Bluff, he engaged in waterfront activities, eventually becoming a partner in the stevedoring firm of Messrs Waddel and Co., in which capacity he was widely known to those connected with the shipping industry.

Mr Hamilton some years ago was appointed to the Bluff Harbour Board as Government nominee, his first-hand knowledge of shipping and harbour matters making him a very valuable member. He was also a Justice of the Peace. Earlier in life Mr Hamilton was wellknown in many branches of sport. While in Dublin he represented his university at both cricket and hockey, besides which he won the university billiards championship. Later on in Southland he captained the representative cricket team, and for many years was a leading player. He was prominent in both the Bluff and Waikiwi football clubs, being a member of the Waikiwi team when they won the Galbraith Shield. As a golfer he achieved note as runner-up in a Southland championship. At the time of his death Mr Hamilton was president of the Bluff Tennis Club and was ranked as an A grade player. Mr Hamilton married Miss Helen Theresa Forde, a member of a wellknown Southland family, and is survived by his wife and three sons and two daughters. The interment will take place in Bluff Cemetery to-mor-row afternoon.
