MILK FOR CHILDREN

SMITH FAMILY’S PLANS.

CONFERENCE TO BE HELD.

(Per United Press Association.)

Wellington, November 13.

In August the Smith Family sent to education boards and to the controlling authorities of Roman Catholic schools a questionnaire for distribution to schools in which milk was distributed to children. It appears from the replies received that in 67 schools milk is supplied free to under-nourished children and relief workers’ children; in 23 schools children pay from 4d to 6d a week for half a pint of milk daily; in the remaining schools the cost is provided by charitable gifts. The cost per gallon of milk ranged from 6d to 1/3. , . In 63 schools pasteurized milk is supplied, and in 27 schools the milk is not pasteurized. The majority of the latter, however, are supplied with milk from herds certified free of disease. The Smith Family has called a meeting of representatives of the citizens to consider a plan for supplying all children in main centres with a daily ration. The president of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union (Mr W. J. Polson), who has taken a keen interest in the matter, will take the chair. On October 1 the plan elaborated by the Milk Market Board for the supplying of milk to children in London came into force, and it is hoped a similar plan here will allow of every child in New Zealand obtaining a vitally necessary addition to his ordinary dietary. ..
