Two amateur cycling events were included on the programme, one-mile and two-mile events. Considering that they were the first track events of the amateur season the standard of riding was very high and some outstanding performances are promised as the season progresses. In the one-mile seven riders faced the starter. W. Kent (130yds) seemed to be day-dreaming and was overtaken before going a quarter of a lap by H. Insall (85yds). After a lap had been covered the riders were in one bunch with Kejit in the lead. The position
was the same at the end of the third lap. Coming up the back straight Insall started to sprint and was followed by the remainder of the field. In the sprint, which was a great tussle for supremacy, Bloy held Johnson off to win by a length with Insall half a wheel away in third place. Eight riders competed in the twomile event. For the first five laps R. Wilson. (180yds) was prominent, but through taking more than his share of laps he faded over the last part of the journey. With only three laps to go there was only one bunch and some fast laps were witnessed. In the final lap M. Smith (scr) was trying hard to reach the front, but left his run too late and coming up the straight faded out of the picture. L. Johnson (scr), who did not ride last season, gained first place by a length from C. W. Robinson (70yds). L. Bloy (70yds) was half a wheel away in third place. The Rugby Park Club has donated a cup for the amateur rider gaining most points during the track meetings this season. Points will be given as follows: First, 5; second, 3; third, 1. As the result of Tuesday’s meeting L. Bloy secures 6 points, L. Johnson 8, C. W. Robinson 3 and H. Insall 1.
At the club’s meeting on Tuesday evening it was decided to hold meetings in future fortnightly. The next meeting will be held on November 20 (open meeting). It was also decided to hold a picnic at Oreti Beach on November 25, the arrangement to be similar to last year’s. During the past road season 12 official races were held by the club, £3O 11/being distributed in trophies. This does not include the successful InvercargillDunedin event. When all things are taken into consideration the club had a very successful road season. The Drummond Club is holding a 21mile road race at 6.20 this evening when a number of local riders will be competing. The event held a fortnight ago proved fairly successful for I.A.C.C. competitors and the writer hopes they are as successful in this evening’s event. The writer understands that the Drummond Club intends holding another road race within a fortnight. Perhaps a suggestion would not be out of place. If a track meeting was staged instead of a road event more local riders would compete. In the past the Drummond Club has given the local club its wholehearted support and the I.A.C.C. wishes the D.A.C.C. a very successful season. The evening sports at the Royal Show on December 11, 12 and 13 have one cycling event each evening. They will be as follows : one mile, one and a-half miles and two miles.
A programme has been received from the Alexandra Amateur Sports Committee. The cycling events include half, one, two and three-mile events. Entries close on December 20. Unfortunately the New Year holidays are somewhat broken up next year, and a number of intending local competitors will find it hard to make the very enjoyable excursion. Advice has been received from the Ryal Bush Club that its opening programme will be a track meeting. Halfmile and one-mile cycle races have been included in the programme, entries for which close with N. Shaw, Ryal Bush, on the 15th inst. Local club members are requested to support these events, for in doing so will not only help themselves, but will do a considerable amount of good in the interests of cycling locally. N. Shaw, exsecretary of the 1.A.C.C., is the handicapper. The Ryal Bush Club was formed only last season and shows every indication of being one of the strongest amateur cycling clubs in Southland.
