GERMAN JEWS

BENEFIT FUND

£5OOO SUBSCRIBED IN LONDON *

GENERAL SMUTS’ APPEAL

(United Press Assn—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 8.55 p.m.) London, November 8. General Smuts, at a luncheon at which £5OOO was subscribed for the benefit of German Jewish women and children, said he remembered when German Jews were regarded as the flower of Judaism and among the most cultured people of the world. It was appalling to think that human beings were not to be free to develop along their own lines, but were to be cast into a mould and forced into a certain type, and that they were not to. develop in the image of God, but in. the image of a man who ought to be in a lunatic asylum. General Smuts added that he did not want to criticize Germany as a nation; she was as much sinned against as sinning, and they must care for the wreckage.
