EWE HOGGETS

A. AND P. ASSOCIATION’S COMPETITION. AWARDS ANNOUNCED. Judging in the Southland A. and P. Association’s ewe hogget competition, which this year attracted good entries, has now been completed and yesterday the judges, Messrs David Marshall and J. M. Watson, announced the awards. The conditions of the competition provide that no fewer than 100 hoggets must be entered and that 10 from each prize-winning group must be exhibited at this year’s Royal Show. The detailed results are as follows:—

Highly Commended. Ralph Gardner (Clifden). Commended. A. S. McNaught (Raukauhauka.) Highly Commended. The judge’s report was as follows:— “Although this year there are few competing the area has been wider and we have found considerable trouble in arriving at a decision. In fact, it was only after paying a return visit to the properties of some of the competitors that we could come to a conclusion; the entries have been so close that it has been hard to separate them. We are not sure that our inland and upland competitors have a fair chance of winning, but we do not see our way to recommend a change in points. The society might discuss the advisability of dividing the competition into two sections. With a view to helping the society we beg to submit our method of arriving at a decision. “Twenty-five points are offered for wool. After careful consideration we could find no other way of arriving at ;. decision, after the elimination of faults, than by awarding points for the cash value shown per sheep. We could not take into consideration the different costs of production on high and low country. The question of evenness, for which the total was 25 points, gave us no trouble. With regard to the 25 points awarded for size and condition, we have not allowed our decision to be unduly influenced by over-grown or over-fat stock so long as the animals are in a condition suitable for the purpose for which they are intended. “We wish to thank the competitors for their kindness to us and to express our appreciation of the sporting manner in which they entered the contest.” Ten sheep from each of the four prize lots will be shown at the Royal Show, and the -judges will inspect them and will be satisfied that they are from the flocks, but the points will not be altered.
