BLUFF BOROUGH
MEETING OF COUNCIL. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Bluff Borough Council was held on Wednesday evening. His Worship the Mayor (Mr T. F. Doyle) presided over the following: Councillors N. W. McGorlick, A. E. Budd, A. C. McKillop, W. T. White, W. T. Walker, O. F. Metzger. Before the general business of the meeting began the Mayor referred to the recent deaths of two local residents, Mrs James Plank and Mr Donald McColl. The former, his Worship said, had been held in the highest esteem by all who knew her and her death at an early age was sincerely regretted. He was sure he was voicing the feelings of all present when he expressed sympathy with the bereaved husband and young family. Mr McColl was wellknown to residents as manager of the local branch of the Single Profit Stores. His courtesy and kindly consideration at all times had. gained for him the respect of all sections of the community, who regarded him as unfailingly sincere and upright in his business and private dealings. Mr McColl had passed suddenly away in the prime of life and the news of his death had come as a great shock to his fellow townsfolk.
A motion expressing the council’s sympathy with the relatives of both deceased (moved by his Worship) was carried in the customary manner.
The secretary of the Bluff Sports Club wrote stating that the Cricket Club had expressed its willingness to allow the former the use of the cricket ground for a number of evening meetings. The writer stated that his club greatly appreciated this action on the part of the Cricket Club and requested permission from the council to use the ground. Permission was granted. An invitation to the Mayor and councillors to attend an Armistice Day service in St. Matthews Church of England on Sunday evening next was received. It was decided to accept the invitation.
Several ratepapers in Ann street made application to have the town water supply made available on their properties. It was decided to accede to the request. It was agreed to sound the fire alarm siren at II a.m. on Sunday, November 11, when two minutes’ silence will be observed.
Th monthly report submitted by the Town Clerk (Mr H. A. Ferguson) showed that receipts from all sources were £725 15/5, while expenditure amounted to £1643 17/. The report stated that in regard to the Foyle street water reticulation scheme excellent progress had been made. The work was begun on October 1 and the whole work of laying the main (with minor exceptions) had been completed in a little over four weeks. This was very satisfactory, considering the large amount of rock encountered on the line. The main was now available for fire-fighting purposes, while any consumers within a reasonable area who wished to have the water supply laid on to their properties could do so by making application to the council. The report was adopted, as were those of the electrical engineer, foreman of works, poundkeeper and borough inspector, Town Hall caretaker, Fire Brigade superintendent, building inspector and health inspector.
