WOODLANDS NOTES
RAINFALL FOR OCTOBER. (From Our Correspondent.) The total rainfall regisiered at Woodlands for October was 1.72 in with rain on 15 days as compared witti 3.9iin for 18 days for October last year. The average lor October taken over a number of years is over three inches, showing that in comparison the month just passed has been relatively dry. The wettest day was the sth when 41 points were recorded. For several days on end there was bright, warm sunshine with little or no wind. The feature of the other days of the month was the frequency and velocity of the winds. On the 12th the district experienced the worst gale within memory, but this was of short duration only. Towards the end of the month farmers were wanting more rain to help along the pastures and give the crops a start, and they got this on the last two days of the month and the first three of this month.
The dairy factories are now in full swing, receiving a supply equal to that of previous years for this period. There has been a hardening in the prices offering for dairy cows and anything showing youth and quality is returning to the seller £1 a head in excess of the price offering a month or six weeks ago.
Mr A. Ward, who has leased his property, held a clearing sale of his stock on Wednesday. There was a large attendance of -farmers from over a wide area and everything met with keen competition and satisfactory prices. The dairy cows, which showed quality but were not in tip-top condition, were sold at prices ranging from £3 to £5 10/-. A draught horse realized £35, ponies £7, £8 and £9 10/-, and bees 14/- a hive. During the absence of the postmaster, Mr McGrath, who is on annual leave in Christchurch, Mr Davey, of the relieving staff, is acting postmaster in Woodlands.
Mr R. Ross, of Port Chalmers, arrived recently to take up a position in the local post office in place of Mr J. Copp, who has been transferred to Invercargill.
