BLUFF NOTES

YOUTH DAY. (From Our Correspondent.) On Sunday last the Annual Youth Day services were held in the Presbyterian Church, the Rev. T. A. Speer occupying the pulpit. At the morning session, various offices were filled by Sunday School children, while a Scripture lesson was read by the superintendent, Mr R. N. Porter. A large congregation attended the evening service, when the minister took “The Church in Action” as his subject. Psalms were read by the Misses L. Calder and H. Lindquist. A full choir was present, with Mr A. Steel at the organ, and the hymns chosen were appropriate to the occasion. The services throughout followed the lines accepted for Youth Day and proved of deep interest to birth the adults and young people of the congregation. The Rev. T. A. Speer and Mrs Speer leave to-day (Wednesday) for Dunedin, where the former will attend the general assembly of the Presbyterian Church. On Sunday morning next the Rev. A. E. Waite will hold a combined Armistice sendee in the Methodist Church at which, it is anticipated, a large congregation will be present. A special address will be given by Mr Waite and the usual two minutes silence observed. Euchre. The week-end euchre tournament In aid of the local Dominion Convent funds was well attended on Saturday night in Mr H. W. Campbell’s rooms. Play was supervised by Mr E. Connell. Winners were: Ladies: Mrs R. Kirkland 1, Mrs J. Miller 2; men, Mr C. Jackson 1, Mr K. McKenzie 2. Greenhills Carnival. Saturday night saw a record crowd in the Greenhills schoolroom for an entertainment given in aid of carnival hall funds for the Hall Princess, Miss J. Boyd. The programme was of a varied nature and the effort was a pronounced success in every way. Miss Boyd was accorded a great reception by the audience, in which were many patrons from Bluff, Clifton, Woodend and further afield. During the evening items were contributed by the following: Mrs R. Wylie, Miss V. Brown, Miss D. Stalker (songs); Master R. Williamson (yodelling songs); Messrs N. Metzger and L. Mouat (vocal duet); Master Hamish Shearer (piano solo). A tug-of-war was one of the features of the entertainment, this attracting entries from Clifton, Woodend, Greenhills (2), and Bluff Maoris. After some excellent contests the last-named team proved to be the winners and to the delight of the audience the victory was celebrated with a haka. For the dance which followed the entertainment Mr C. Parsons filled the role of M.C., the orchestra being composed of: Miss M. McLachlan, Messrs W. Grant, E. Bigwood, T. Stalker, M. Gillooly. Extras were played by Mrs D. Oates and Mrs J. Oates. The committee intends to hold another tug-of-war in connection with the carnival effort at an early dale.
