COMPANY PROMOTER
BROUGHT BACK FROM AUSTRALIA. ALLEGED FALSE PRETENCES. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, October 10. Charged in Melbourne on September 13 with having defrauded certain persons in New Zealand of £14,000, Charles Ernest Vickers, Australian company promoter, arrived at Auckland by the Wanganella escorted by Detective Murray, of Wellington. The charge against him alleges false pretences in connection with the Craftsman Manufacturing Company of New Zealand, Ltd. Earlier this year Vickers was arrested in Melbourne on a charge of obtaining £lOOO from J. D. Patterson at Manaia by false representations regarding the Craftsman Manufacturing Company, and in May De-tective-Sergeant Jarold went to Melbourne to bring him back to ‘Wellington. However, the case against Vickers was dismissed by a Melbourne Court on a technicality and he walked out of court and vanished. When Vickers was subsequently arrested, the police stated that he had been making preparations to sail for Singapore. He was remanded until the arrival of an escort to take him back to New Zealand, and was allowed bail on condition that he reported daily to the police. Vickers and Detective Murray travelled from Melbourne by the Wanganella in the second class. Their presence on board occasioned no comment as they travelled as ordinary passengers. They left for Wellington by train and Vickers will nrobably appear in the Wellington Police Court to-morrow.
