LUMSDEN NOTES

MEETING OF TOWN BOARD. (From Our Correspondent.) At the first monthly meeting of the newly-elected Lumsden Town Board Commissioners Heath, Dripps, Little, Johnson, McDonald, Moloney and Small were present. Mr Heath was elected chairman unopposed, and the following committees were appointed:— Reserves, Councillors A. Heath, T. Small and T. McDonald; finance, Councillors Johnson, Dripps and Little; works, members of the board. Messrs E. C. Ashby and J. Ogilvy, representing the Lumsden Cricket Club, waited on the board regarding the cutting of the grass at the recreation reserve. It was stated that the sum of £2 had been owing to the club for cutting the grass two seasons ago. After some discussion it was agreed to pay the club the amount owing, and to charge the usual fee for the use of the grounds. It was also decided to allow sheep on the domain to keep the grass in check. The Minister of Internal Affairs wrote regarding the visit of the Duke of Gloucester. The letter stated that every effort should be made to give the children an opportunity of taking part in the welcome. Commissioners were of the opinion that the time was not suitable for a reception at Lumsden. The Royal party would arrive at midnight, leave for Te Anau on Sunday morning, returning to Lumsden on Sunday night, and travel to Queenstown early on Monday morning. It was decided to write and obtain further particulars. The chairman stated that the recent flood had damaged the protective works. It was resolved that an inspection be made. The clerk was instructed to make inquiries for the purchase of iron rails for use at the groin. The condition of the local cemetery was referred to as being disgraceful by several commissioners. It was agreed to engage labour to put the grounds in order.

The clerk reported that the position regarding outstanding rates was satisfactory. _____
