PARLIAMENT
CUSTOMS AMENDMENT BILL.
SECONDARY INDUSTRIES.
(From Our Parliamentary Reporter). Wellington, September 20.
A strong plea for protection of secondary industries in New Zealand was the keynote of the Labour Party’s contribution to the debate on the schedule of the Customs Act Amendment Bill in the House of Representatives to-day. Few Government members spoke during the day but the major part of the discussion was confined to the Labour and Independent benches. Baking powder, clothing boots and similar items were the main points discussed, many of the other lines going through without comment. The duty on radios and electric ranges, which would probably have led to a considerable discussion were held over and fair progress was made, about 360 of the 450 items being disposed of. The House rose at 1.15 a.m.
