COLAC BAY NOTES

BASKETBALL. (From Our Correspondent.) The following are the results of matches played in the Riverton District Basketball Sub-Association’s competition on Wednesday: Riverton 20 v. Fairfax 1; Waipango 25 v. Urewera 3; Pahia 9 v. Capables 1; Ermedale 15 v. Colac 14. School Teacher Farewelled. On Wednesday evening the Murihiku Hall was filled when the native population of Colac farewelled Mr and Mrs Sullivan and family who are leaving for Musselburgh where Mr Sullivan will resume teaching. Mrs Frank Belsham acted as hostess and Mr J. Beaton as chairman. The guests of the evening were escorted to the stage by members of the Southern Maori concert party who sang a Maori welcome song, “Haere, Mai, Haere Mai.” The following items were also given during the evening: “Haere Mai Ra,” the party; canoe poi, the girls; yodelling solo, Mr Iwi Belsham, who accompanied himself on the guitar; chorus, the party; yodelling solo, Miss Jessie Hodge accompanied by Mr Iwi Belsham on the guitar; quartet, E. Kora and Mesdames Goodwillie Belsham, McKay sen., and Miss McKay; single poi, girls; haka, the party; closing chorus, the party. Music for the dancing was supplied by Mrs Valintine (piano), Messrs McKay sen., (violin), Goodwillie (guitar), Belsham (guitar), while extras were played by Mr M. Belsham. The duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr T. Te Au. * In making the presentations, Mr Beaton said that they were all very sorry to lose Mr and Mrs Sullivan who had been residents in the district for about 11 years. Mr Sullivan was a very popular teacher and had always had a good percentage of passes every year in the proficiency examinations. On behalf of the Maori population the chairman presented Mr Sullivan with a Maori mat, Mrs Sullivan with a hand-woven hamper, Misses Margaret and Elaine Sullivan each with a set of pois and Master lan Sullivan with a model Maori canoe. The chairman’s remarks were endorsed by Messrs Aberdeen (Round Hill), Hampstead and Fluety. Mr Sullivan suitably replied. Among the many present were Mr and Mrs Sullivan, Mr and Mrs Belsham, Mr and Mrs Davis, Mr and Mrs A. McKay, Mr and Mrs J. McKay, Mr and Mrs Goodwillie, Mr and Mrs J. Pont, Mr and Mrs P. On Tuesday evening the members of the Girl Guide Committee gave a surprise afternoon in honour of Mrs Sullivan, who has been the president of the Girl Guides since they first start-, ed at Colac. In making the presentation Mrs Whittle (the secretary) wished the guest of honour the best of. prosperity in her new sphere. Mrs Sullivan suitably replied. Those present were Mesdames Sullivan, Whittle, Pont, Egerton, Pearse, Neilson, Aberdeen, Patterson, McNaughton, and Dawson,

On Tuesday evening the members of the Women’s Division gave an evening at the residence of Mrs J. Pont in honour of Mrs Sullivan who was presented with a silver cake stand and three plates. On Friday afternoon the school children presented Mr Sullivan with a fountain pen. The ex-pupils also presented Mr Sullivan with a shaving outfit.

Miss Andersen (Invercargill) has been visiting Mr and Mrs Sullivan. Miss Shepard (Bluff) is the guest of Mr and Mrs D. Noble.

Miss Egerton has returned home from a holiday spent with Miss Peggy Branks, Ryal Bush. Mrs Evans and family are spending a holiday with Mr and Mrs Patterson.
