CHURCH OF ENGLAND. (From Our Correspondent). The annual meeting of the Church of England took place in the vestry of St. Matthew’s on Thursday evening last, the Rev. W. W. Ewart presiding. There was a large attendance of the congregation. Before the business of the meeting was begun Mr Ewart feelingly referred to the death in Christchurch that day of Mrs C. E. Shallcrass, of Timaru, a sister of Mr E. A. Nichol, of Bluff. A motion of condolence with the latter was carried, those present standing in silence.
In his address to the congregation, the chairman said that although they had passed through a difficult period there was reason to be satisfied with the year’s work. In all ways the church had held its own. The annual bazaar was a huge success owing to the untiring efforts of those responsible and the generous support of the public. In connection with the bazaar, the meeting recorded votes of thanks to Mrs R. Fowler for her outstanding work in designing the dresses for the entertainment portion of the effort (which, it was stated, added considerably to the success attained on that occasion); to Miss C. Metzger, organizer, Mrs Ewart, president of the Ladies’ Guild, Mrs Fogarty, secretary, and to the members of the orchestra whose playing was a feature of the bazaar. There was also a motion forward from the vestry expressing thanks to the Ladies’ Guild, the Young Ladies) Guild and all who had assisted in making the year a successful one. The following vestrymen were elected: Messrs E. Parsons (secretary), E. A. Nichol (treasurer), O. F. Metzger, J. H. Doyle, H. Newman, R. Woods, F. J. Shearer, A. H. King, C. Barker, C. Hannan. A pleasant function occurred during the evening when the opportunity was taken to make a presentation to Miss Dulcie M. Lovett. Mr Ewart, on behalf of the congregation, asked Miss Lovett’s acceptance of a fireside chair and set of books, and in doing so stressed the value to the church of her fine services over the last eight years as organist. At other functions connected with the church Miss Lovett had also readily assisted and he and the congregation were deeply appreciative of her generous help on all occasions. In replying, Miss Lovett said that the gift, for which she sincerely thanked the donors, had come as a complete surprise. Regarding her duties as organist, she could honestly say that these formed a labour of love and she hoped to long continue in a work that was a genuine pleasure to her.
