SUSTENANCE RATES
BELIEF WORKERS’ PROTEST.
CHILDREN KEPT FROM SCHOOL.
(Per United Press Association.) Auckland, June 28.
A movement to withdraw their children from school as a _ protest against the sustenance rates is afoot among the relief workers of the New Lynn Borough. About a dozen children were kept at home to-day and a house-to-house canvass is in progress so that upwards of 300 children may be affected. The wives of relief workers are supporting their husbands’ refusal to accept what they term “task work,” and are signing a petition or declaration _ that the amount of the sustenance is inadequate to maintain the children’s general health, that the children consequently are in no condition to receive instruction, and that until the sustenance rate is increased the children will be kept at home.
