CENTRAL DISTRICT. LOCHIEL AND ROVERS DRAW. (From Our Correspondent) A further series of matches in the second round of the senior competition of the Central Basketball SubAssociation’s competition was played on Wednesday afternoon. Much enthusiasm was shown in the meeting of Rovers and Lochiel on the Winton tennis courts, and there was a large attendance present to witness an exciting game that ended in a draw. A strong northerly win made playing conditions difficult. Winton had rather a decisive win over Rval Bush, who, however, gave an improved showing. Limehills and Oreti had an even tussle in which the former were the winners. LOCHIEL (4) v. ROVERS (4). On the day Rovers appeared to be the better side, and for the best part of the game were the aggressors. The forwards of the respective sides could not be condemned for their repeated failure to goal.. Once again the ability of the Rovers centre line was shown, and although the Lochiel centres provided stiff opposition, the Rovers trio were always on top. As a result the Rovers forwards were given unlimited chances and despite their good work in getting within a handy range of the post, they could do everything but score. The defenders also did a lot of good work, but the combination of the Lochiel forwards was always strong, although they were all at sea as far as shooting went. M. Collett (exBluff and Kia Ora) played in the Rovers* defence line. In the Rovers forward third I. Egerton and E. Cavanagh were always dangerous, while the centre trio, B. and D. Andrews and D. Blackmun, combined effectively. M. Robb and J. Cowie were the pick of the Lochiel defenders, the showing of the former being really good. F. Irwin’s field work in the Lochiel forward third showed a decided _ improvement and she combined well with D. Munro. The best of the centres were M. Moylan and M. Irwin. The scores at the mterval were 4-all, there being no further scoring in the second half. . Mr G. McKenzie was referee. WINTON (12) v. RYAL BUSH (2). The showing of Ryal Bush against Winton was an improvement and the match was quite an interesting one. Ryal Bush centres gave a better showing. The Winton forward line was always dangerous. T. Valli, i-. the absence of B. Mitchell, played in this line and gave an outstanding display, her shooting as well as her courtwork being of a high order. She combined excellently with M. Balch, who also gave one of her best displays. The Winton defence line again played soundly. Mr McCullough was referee. LIMEHILLS (14) v. ORETI (11). Oreti put up a good showing against Limehills, although going under by 14 to 11. The game was exciting throughout, JUNIOR SECTION, REPRESENTATIVE PRACTICE. The following junior players have been chosen by the selectors (Mrs O. Jamieson, Miss K. Bell and Mr E. Ward) to take part in a representative practice on the Winton tennis courts on Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m.:— Forwards: Mrs Cleave. (Limehills); Misses Moloney (Lochiel), Wilson (Browns), Ritchie (Lochiel), Tippett (Rovers),- Clausen (Lochiel), Bruland (Rovers), Rizzi (Rovers). Centres: A. Murphy (Rovers), E. McDermott (Rovers), I. McKenzie (Winton), B. Ritchie (Lochiel), V. Cooney (Limehills). R. Moran (Lochiel), B. Horne (Lochiel). Defenders: R. Balch (High School), V. Campbell (Winton), Misses Irwin (Browns), Mcllwrick (Browns), Cunningham (Lochiel), M.. Mi Ils (Browns), R. McGillivray (Limehills). HANDICAP TOURNAMENT. There was a large attendance at the Winton tennis courts when under the auspices of the local suo-association a

junior handicap tournament was held. The weather conditions were against good basketball. The scratch team, Lochiel, were the eventual winners, and on the day were a much superior combination to any of the other junior teams. Messrs McCullough, G. McKenzie and W. Norman acted as referees, while the scorers and . timekeepers were Messrs H. J. Mathias and W. Clark. Ten-minute spells each way were played. Results were:—

First Round. —Lochiel (scr) 7 v. Winton (rec. 5) 5; Browns (rec. 3) 7 v Limehills (rec. 2) 6; High School (rec 4) 6 v. Rovers (rec. 2) 4. Semi-Finals. —Lochiel had to concede three points to Browns, and in winning 7 to 6 had nothing to spare' at the finish. High School had a bye. Final.—The finalists, Lochiel (scr) and High School (rec. 4) had an interesting game, although the School team did not threaten danger at any stage. Under the condition.? prevailing Lochiel experienced great difficulty in notching the necessary goals. The work of the forwards, Misses Ritchie, Moloney and Clausen, was of a high standard, the first mentioned playing outstandingly in each of her matches. The centres also were dangerous, handling particularly well and giving their forwards plenty of openings. R. Moran and B. Ritchie played magnificently, the display of the former being well up to senior status. The Lochiel defenders were always a strong unit, J. Cunningham being prominent. The work of R. Balch in the School defence line was also good.
