ACCOUNTANT STUDENTS

INVERCARGILL SOCIETY.

The fortnightly meeting of the Invercargill Accountant Students’ Society was held last evening, Mr R. S. McInnes presiding over a good attendance of members.

Arrangements were made for the annual debate with the Otago University Commerce Faculty Debating Society which is to be held in Invercargill in August. The lecturer for the evening was Mr J. C. Prain, LLB., the subject being “Law of Contract.” At the outset Mr Prain gave a very interesting outline of the history upon which the present law is founded.' He then dealt in detail with the requirements necessary for the formation of a valid contract, including the capacity to make contracts, and also in certain cases the reason why some contracts must be in writing before thev can be brought as evidence in legal proceedings. He then dealt with the penalty for a breach of contract, including damages _or specific performance. Special attention was paid to the question of offer and acceptance in deciding whether there was a contract or not, many interesting cases being quoted. At the conclusion of his address Mr Prain answered a number of questions, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his interesting and lucid address, members expressing the hope that he would again consent to assist the society.
