CENTRAL DISTRICT NOTES.

WINTON’S IMPROVED FORM.

(By

“Full-Back.”)

The meeting of Central and Western for the Baird Cup at Drummond on Wednesday is being keenly awaited. On Country Day form Western would appear to have a decided advantage, but it can be expected that Central will be a much improved combination. As a result of their win over Limehills last Saturday Winton again lead in the Hamilton Shield competition by one point. Limehills have as yet two games to play and Winton one. The position of the senior competition at present is interesting. Limehills have two hard games before them, against Central Star and Dipton. while Winton meet Drummond. If the Blue and Whites win the both of their matches they will gain the shield, but a loss in one of the contests may mean that Winton retain the trophy, provided the Maroons defeat Drummond on Saturday.

The decision of the Southland Union to allow Eastern players participating in the Galbraith Shield competition to be included in the Southland subunion team has been criticized in the Central District. Keen interest had been manifested in the alteration in the rearguard of the Winton fifteen. Since they have been playing senior football, for the past four or five seasons, Calder and Pierce have filled the first and second five-eighth positions respectively, while during the past three seasons McCurdy has been centre. In these positions these three players have been included in the local district team in recent seasons. At the commencement of the current season Driscoll and Calder played in the first five-eighth position alternately, and with the excellent showings of the former the selectors experienced difficulty in suitably rearranging the rearguard. An attempt was made to play Calder and Driscoll in the five-eighth line, Pierce at centre and McCurdy on the wing, but this formation did not produce the results anticipated, and the failure of the outside men was noticeable. On Saturday last a further trial was attempted, and on this occasion the combination functioned in promising fashion. Calder was played behind the scrum (a move that has been advocated by the writer throughout the season), while Driscoll played at first fiveeighth, Pierce at second and McCurdy in his old position of centre. Although his deliveries were at tunes erratic, Calder settled down to the position in quick fashion and although given little assistance by his forwards when it came to packing he frustrated repeated onslaughts. His passing from the base of the scrum could have been improved considerably, but as the match progressed this improvement was in evidence. Calder, who learned his Rugby at the Southland Technical College, represented that institution’s first fifteen when playing behind the scrum. At first five-eighth Driscoll gave a sound exhibition, while McCurdy and Pierce both gave improved displays. It is probable that the inside back formation as quoted above will be chosen for the team to meet Western on Wednesday.

The Central team to meet Western will be announced on Saturday evening. The full-back position may be one for speculation and there appears to be a general view that Whitaker has not come up to expectations. Although the Dipton stalwart has not been filling the full-back berth regularly, his exhibition on Country Day was sound enough, and his reliability is a big factor in his favour. P. Laing may be a contender for the position and if he was anywhere near his best his choice ahead of Whitaker would not be surprising. McKenzie (Drummond) is fairly safe, but may not come up to representative standard. Next to Whitaker, Robb (Central Star) seems to be the only man in the running, and although his positional play is not of the best he could quite well be given a trial against Southern. Both Cosgrove (Winton) and Gordon (Limehills) are promising players. The fact that Thombury (Dipton) has again turned out for the Red and Whites will have been welcomed by the selectors. He is bound to be found a place on one of the wings. The two wingers that took part on Country Day were given few chances and one of them is bound to be tried again. Brosnan and Calder will more than likely dispute the half-back position and at this stage it appears as though the latter will be the choice. It is not likely that any drastic alterations will be made in the vanguard. J. South and Burke may be replaced. South’s form has not been as good as in past seasons, while Burke is a young forward who does not appear to get anywhere with his work. Boyle (Winton) has shown improved form of late, while Ward (Limehills) would be a decided acquisition with his weight. In a good match last week Winton lowered the colours of Limehills by 5 to 3, and as a consequence each side has now a victory over the other. In departments of forward work Limehills dominated, while the superiority of the Winton backs were features of the game. With a weight advantage the Limehills pack played good football, and solid packing earned them an advantage throughout. In line-outs especially the visiting forwards always enjoyed a monopoly, the work of Ward, Casey and Watson being first class. In loose work Watson was also to the fore and must be stamped as one of the most improved of the Limehills pack. The absence of Murphy in the home pack was greatly felt, but Boyle and D. Watson played up to the situation. McDougall played an outstanding game as also did Robertson. In the Limehills rearguard Brosnan gave excellent service until injured, while Reid’s defensive work was quite good. Gordon played out of position, but was given few chances in the five-eighth line. Clark made the most of what came his way.

SOUTHERN DISTRICT SUB-UNION. JUNIOR COMPETITION. The secretary of the Southern District Sub-Union advises that a mistake has been made in the venue of junior matches as published. All the games mentioned are to be played on the ground of the second-named team, the games for June 30 being Tokanui v. Seaward Downs, at Seaward Downs; Gorge Road v. Oteramika, at Oteramika; Morton Mains a bye.

CENTRAL SUB-UNION.

MEETING OF DELEGATES.

At a meeting of delegates of the Central District Rugby Football Sub-Union at Winton on Wednesday evening, the president, Mr W. G. Clark, presided over a small attendance.

Transfers were granted as follows: S. W. McNaughton (Rimu to Wrights Bush), D. W. Whitelaw (Waianiwa to Wrights Bush), A. D. Smith (Wyndham to Limehills), P. Anderson (Rimu to Drummond). The secretary of the Champion Ploughing Match Association advised that this year’s fixture would be held on Mr J. J. Blakie’s property on July 7, and that adjoining the ploughing paddock was a suitable area for football. Arrangements for the Rugby match between Central and Southern were finalized.

The secretary of the Northern SubUnion wrote requesting Central to submit a date for the playing of the Stewart Cup match between Central and Northern (holders) to be played at Lumsden. It was decided to suggest

July 28 as a suitable date and also to request the Northern Sub-Union to mention a date for the return Stewart Cup match to be played at Dipton. The secretary of the Western SubUnion advised that arrangements for the annual Baird Cup match in conjunction with the Drummond ploughing match fixture of July 4 were well in hand. With reference to the allocation of the Mitchell Cup it was mentioned that this matter had been discussed by the Western Sub-Union and while the conditions governing the trophy were not known, a suggestion was made that the match for the trophy take place alternately in the Central and Western districts. With a view to finalizing the matter, Messrs Lindsay, Millar and Fisher had been appointed to confer with Central District representatives on Wednesday. It was decided that Messrs Clark, Reid and Phillips meet the Western District representatives at Drummond.

The referee of the Ryal Bush-Wrights Bush junior match played at Ryal Bush on June 2 brought before the sub-union’s notice the conduct of Ryal Bush supporters towards the referee and complained of too many side-line referees, disagreeable and sarcastic remarks towards the referee while the game was in progress and also of Wrights Bush supporters disputing the time with the referee at the conclusion of the match. The time had been taken by the referee himself. It was hoped that the sub-union would give the complaint its fullest consideration as it was most unpleasant to control matches under such conditions. In the discussion on the subject a serious view was taken of the complaint and the secretary was instructed to write to the Ryal Bush and Wrights Bush clubs requesting them to do their utmost to prevent any recurrence of such incidents.

The secretary of the Southland Union advised that Sports Trust Cup fixtures would be played as follows: Wednesday, July 11, v. Eastern at Otautau; Saturday, August 4, v. Central; Saturday, August 11, v. Northern. The Southern team’s challenge had yet to be arranged. It was decided that the Forde Cup match, between the winners and run-ners-up of the Hamilton Shield competition, be played on July 21. Mr W. G. Clark was appointed manager of the team to travel to Drummond on July 4 to meet Western, while Mr J. Reid was appointed manager of the team to meet Southern at Branxholm on July 7. It was decided to ask the Western Sub-Union to submit a date for the annual Mudge Shield match.

SOCCER SUSPENSION OF CLUB. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, June 28. The suspension of the Hamilton Wanderers Club by the South Auckland Football Association has been considered by the Council of the New Zealand Football Association and the opinion arrived at is that the sentence is unduly severe, as the matter appeared to be one of pure misunderstanding and could have been avoided had the South Auckland Football Association kept a correct record of club results. The council also realized that the two clubs, Hamilton Wanderers and Star, tied with 17 points each for second position and that Hamilton Wanderers, if the goal average be taken into consideration, would be placed second. The matter therefore had been referfed back to the South Auckland Football Association, as it was the unanimous decision of the council that the suspension be lifted. WRESTLING FIXTURE FOR INVERCARGILL. MEYER TO MEET MAMOS. The Southland Wrestling Association has been unable to arrange for George Walker to take part in a local bout next week, but it has been successful in making arrangements for Dr. Meyer to wrestle Harry Mamos in the Civic Theatre next Thursday evening.
