BIBLE SOCIETY

OTAGO AND SOUTHLAND.

ADDRESS BY ORGANIZER.

The Invercargill branch of the Bible Society of Otago and Southland with the collectors met on Tuesday. The president, the Rev. C. J. Tocker, introduced Miss Margaret Ramsay, organizing secretary of the Bible Society, and in welcoming her to Invercargill assured her that such a visit would do much to extend the work. He also made reference to the fact that one of the speakers at the annual meeting of the society in London was the Rev. A. T. Thompson, an old Invercargill boy. Miss Ramsay stated that the society, which was founded in Otago 70 years ago, existed for the purpose of assisting the National Bible Society of Scotland and the British and Foreign Bible Society in the great work of seeking to give the people of the world . the Scriptures in their own tongue. These societies had now printed the Bible or portions of the Bible in 678 languages and during last year printed and distributed 14,000,000 copies in various countries of the world. She stressed the point that the society was essential to all missionary efforts, and having no denominational barrier was a work in which all Christian people could whole-heartedly unite. Miss Ramsay, who is the guest of Miss Thomson, 64 McMaster street, is to spend some weeks in Invercargill and has already been engaged to speak at several women’s and other meetings.
