Miss Alice M. Lawson, of the Otago relieving staff, has been appointed sole teacher of the Eastern Bush school. Miss Clare Harper has been transferred from the position of assistant mistress of the Gummies Bush school to assistant mistress at the Mataura Island school.
Colonel S. C. P. Nicholls, D. 5.0., N.Z.S.C., officer commanding the Southern Command, is at present in Invercargill on a tour of inspection of the regimental district.
Private cable advice was received in Wanganui yesterday (states a Press Association telegram) from England announcing the death of Mr Walter Empson, aged 78. He was headmaster of Wanganui Collegiate School from 1887 till 1908. Mr Empson was to Wanganui Collegiate what Professor Arnold was to Rugby. Mr Walter Sibbald Grieve, who died at Dunedin recently, -was formerly a very popular resident of the Waianiwa district. A son of the late Mr R. Grieve, of Branxholme, Oporo, for a time he farmed his father’s property before selling out. He then went to Canterbury where for some years he kept a store at Fairlie. Later he lived in retirement in Dunedin. He leaves a widow, a daughter and a son.
Rear-Admiral C. A. M. Sarel ’arrived at Auckland from Sydney by the Monowai on Monday, accompanied by his wife and daughters. After a holiday tour of the North Island, they will leave for England by the Mataroa, from Wellington, on June 22. RearAdmiral Sard, who is retiring from the service, has for the last two years been in command of the Melbourne depot of the Royal Australian Navy.
Mr H. J. F. Mills has been appointed manager of the New Zealan Shipping Company’s London office, in succession to Mr Godfrey Holdsworth. Mr W. C. How has been appointed assistant manager, and Mr C. W. Payne has been appointed secretary, in succession to Mr Mills. Mr Mills is a son of Sir James Mills, for many years general manager, managing director, and chairman of directors of the Union Steam Ship Company.
The Rev. Professor James Moffatt, M.A., D.Litt., D.D., Washbum Professor of Church History in Union Theological Seminary, New York, who will visit New Zealand this year on a holiday tour, will arrive at Auckland on November 17, and is to sail again on December 11. During the few weeks he will be on holiday here Dr Moffatt is anxious to try his luck with New Zealand trout, and he has agreed to spend some of his time fulfilling preaching and speaking engagements. It is very unlikely that he will be able to include the South Island in his itinerary.
