Mr and Mrs L. H. Mirams will return to Dunedin by car to-day. Mrs F. D. Muirhead, Dunedin, is the guest of Mrs W. Gibb, Venus street. Mrs G. H. Uttley, the Rectory, Crinan street, returned on Tuesday from a holiday in Timaru. Miss Jessie Cunningham, Duke street, who has been visiting the country, returned home on Thursday. Miss Mollie McGregor, Mount Linton, who returned from Dunedin last Sunday, paid a brief visit to town on Friday. Miss M. A. U. Hurse, who has completed 31 years’ missionary service in Melanesia, returned last month to New Zealand on retirement. She will live in Christchurch. Guests at the Club Hotel during the week include Miss J. Wright (Dunedin), Mrs B. Unwin (Waikaia), Mrs C. Tripp (Pukerau), Mr and Mrs J. Duthie (Dunedin) and Miss V. Timms (Dunedin). Mrs Sandford Cox, of Dunedin, is staying in London with her sister, Miss MacGregor (says a London correspondent writing on May 8). She hopes to remain in England until the end of the year. In a few days’ time she will leave for Oxford to visit her son and later she hopes to see something of Scotland. On Wednesday evening Mrs Robert Stout, Layard street, gave a bridge party for Mrs P. L. Porter, of Christchurch. Her guests were: Mesdames D. Cuthbertson, C. F. A. Jones, R. J. Gilmour, F. G. Hall-Jones, L. Spencer, A. H. Mackrell, W. F. Sturman, Emyrs Thomas, B. W. Hewat and E. F. I Dame Sybil Thorndike has been playing the part of the Queen in the , “Old Vic” production of “Hamlet,” in which the New Zealand actress, Marie Ney, is taking the part of Ophelia (says an exchange). Miss Ney is at present appearing in “Touch Wood,” a new play by C. L. Anthony, the author of “Autumn Crocus,” which had a successful season here a few years ago, with Theo Shall in the leading role. “Autumn Crocus,” by the way, has just been made into a talking film, with Fay Compton duplicating her London success as the heroine, and with Ivor Novello as the innkeeper.

A very jolly afternoon was held at the residence of Mrs C. Officer, West Plains, on Thursday. Large vases of bronze and yellow chrysanthemums decorated the dining room, while a blazing fire added to the comfort of those present. The hostess received the guests wearing a smart frock of floral velvet. Competitions and social talk made the afternoon pass all too quickly. The winners of the competitions were Mesdames Fyffe, Wellock and McDonald. As these meetings are very popular and instructive, it was decided to hold one every month, each lady acting in turn as hostess. Those present included Mesdames Officer, Tuckey, Fyffe, McDonald, Wellock, Burgess, Williams, Misses Simpson (2), A. Taylor and A. Townend.

Miss Neta Hall and her parents spent a day in town during the week. Mr and Mrs B. Ireland, Duke Street, have been visiting Timaru. Mrs E. F. Selby, of Gore, was a visitor to town during the week. The Misses Tucker, Gala street, were hostesses at afternoon tea on Monday. Misses Hope, Norrie and Cara Pinckney, Glenaray, visited Mossbum for the hunt during the week. Miss S. Birss, Winton, who has been the guest of her aunt, Mrs Hamilton, Teviot street, returns home to-day. Miss Nancy Nicholson, Herbert street, who has been paying a brief visit to Dunedin, arrived home on Thursday evening. Mr and Mrs Hugh Anderson, “Brookdale,” Hokonui, visited Sir Robert and Lady Anderson, “Victoria Park,” during the week. Mrs W. H. King, the Misses Enid and Norma King, “Tynree,” Benmore, and Mr Basil Anderson, “Brookdale,” Hokonui, have returned from Dunedin. Miss Margaret King, of “The Bend,” Winton, is spending a fortnight’s holiday with her sister, Mrs A. J. Brown, Palmer street, Bluff. The Rev. and Mrs Cyprian Webb have returned to Gore from Dunedin. The former was Southland’s representative at the consecration and enthronement of the new Bishop of Dunedin. Mrs Webb was present at the reception given to Mrs West Watson, wife of the Bishop of Christchurch. Miss Betty Macdonald, Avenal Road, was hostess at bridge in honour of Miss H. Allen of Wellington, last Tuesday evening. Her guests included Misses Elinor Jones, Esther Riddle, Wynnis Armour, Mary Crawford, Gertrude Macdonald, June Moffett, Hilda Nichol (Bluff), Cowie and Mollie Girdler.

Among those present on Thursday at the annual meeting of the Birchwood hounds at Mossbum were: Mesdames H. J. Macalister (Invercargill), W. Pinkney (Glenaray), A. Selby, of Gore, gave a delightful teaparty at the Brown Owl in honour of Mrs H. D. McHugh. The colour scheme—the blue and gold Southland Regimental colours—was carried out to the last detail. Violets and bronze chrysanthemums adorned the table and even the plates were of blue and gold. The place-cards had the regimental colours on them and on the icing on the cake was depicted the New Zealand flag.

COMING OF AGE. An enjoyable evening was spent at the residence of Mr H. Knowler, Te Wae W&e, on Tuesday, June 12, when a number of the young people of the surrounding districts assembled to celebrate the coming of age of his daughter, Doreen. The evening was spent in games, competitions and items. Winners of the various competitions were Mr P. Knowler, Miss C. O’Brien, Mr J. Forde, Miss D. O’Brien and Mr D. McKay. Musical items were rendered by Mr R. Dennis (violin solos), Messrs S. Mumford and F. Herricks (vocal, steel guitar and accordion duos) and Misses D. and L. Knowler (vocal duets). The supper room presented a gay appearance with coloured streamers and paper hats. The usual toasts were honoured and the key was presented to the guest of honour by her brother Mr Richard Knowler. The birthday cake with its 21 candles was the gift of Mrs N. Sutherland, Te Tua. The happy evening was brought to a close by the singing of Auld Lang Syne. Those present were: Mr H. On Thursday, June 7, Messrs Bruce Wallace, Alan Caird and Bert Young entertained friends at a dance held in the Bowmont street Kindergarten Hall in honour of the coming of age of Mr Budge Ramsay. The music was supplied by Mr Aldridge. After supper had been handed round, Mr Bruce Wallace, after a few complimentary remarks, called upon the guest of the evening to light the 21 candles and cut the cake, a piece of which was given to each of those present. Mr L. Allott when presenting the “key” to Mr Budge Ramsay, endorsed the remarks of the previous speaker. Mr Ramsay suitably replied. Amongst those present were: Mrs J. B. Ramsay, Misses S. Ross, M. Mrs W. Pinckney and her two sons, of Glenaray, are spending the weekend with Mrs Angus Macdonald, “The Plains,” Mossburn. Mrs Denniston Cuthbertson, Duke street, left for Auckland on Friday. She sails next week by the Wanganella for Sydney, Norfolk Island and Noumea. Miss Ellen Oliver, Holywood Terrace, is the guest of Miss Mollie Pears, Etalvale, for the Mossbum hunt. She expects to return to town early next week. Miss S. Baxter, Kapuka, and Miss B. Flynn, Ohai, have been visiting Mrs J. H. Drake, Ocean Beach and were present at the annual ball held recently by the Freezing Works employees. Guests at the Grand Hotel during the week included: Mr and Mrs and Miss McCarthy (Wanganui), Mr and Mrs O. J. Wilson (Christchurch) and Mr and Mrs Menlove (Athol). Major and Mrs H. D. McHugh have been staying with Dr and Mrs A. Owen Johnston, Thomson street, during the week. Mrs McHugh left for the north by this morning’s express. Miss Story, Venlaw, leaves on Monday for Dunedin where she will be the guest of Dr and Mrs Gerald Fitzgerald. Later she will continue to the North Island where she will spend some weeks holiday.
