NEW BELGIAN RULER
ACCESSION TO THE THRONE. KING FORMALLY INFORMED. (British Official Wireless.) Rugby, June 13. A semi-State landau from the Royal stable, with footmen dressed in scarlet, conveyed to Buckingham Palace the Due Dursel and the other members of the Belgian mission who came to England to formally inform the King of the accession of King Leopold 111. They were received by the King in the State apartments and his Majesty, in replying, referred to the profound sorrow which he and his family and his people sensed at the untimely death of King Albert. “His loftiness of character and his steadfastness of purpose in peace and in war alike will be held in lasting admiration and reverent memory in the countries of the British Empire no less than in the land for whose liberties he so valiantly strove,” said his Majesty. “It is my earnest prayer that the proud recollection of King Albert’s achievements may facilitate the task of his illustrious son to whom the sceptre has now passed, and that, under his Majesty King Leopold 111., the Belgium nation may enjoy complete tranquillity and increasing prosperity.”
