MILK FOR SCHOOLS

PROPOSED DAILY RATION. CONSIDERATION BY COUNTY COUNCIL. The question of inaugurating a scheme to provide children attending primary schools with a daily ration of milk came before the Southland County Council yesterday when a letter was received from the secretary of the Southland Hospital Board (Mr T. Pryde) stating that the board had decided to approach local authorities and others interested to ascertain. whether it was possible, in co-operation with the board, to start such a scheme. Tire chairman (Mr L. A. Niederer) said that if New Zealanders drank as much milk individually as Americans they would consume the milk of another 150,000 cows. At the same time they would be helping a sick industry and the children, who needed more milk for their health’s sake. He thought the council should assist the scheme. Councillor T. Golden said the homes needed milk as well as the. schools. The Hospital Board was awaiting a report from the school medical officer (Dr Abbott) and he thought it would be wise to wait for her report. He considered that the council should hold the matter over for another month. Councillor J. McNeill said that if the housewife received milk in this manner, she would not buy it from the. milkman. It was decided, on the motion of the chairman seconded by Councillor Golden, to send a resolution to the Royal Commision on the Dairy Industry asking it to recommend to the Government a national scheme for the distribution of milk and to hold the matter over till, a report was received from the Hospital Board.
