MISS JEAN BATTEN BAD FLYING CONDITIONS ELATED AT SUCCESS (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 6.30 p.m.) Sydney, May 27. Advice has been received in Sydney that owing to rain and bad flying conditions Miss Batten has abandoned her intention of reaching Charleville tonight and has landed at Blackall. She will be unable to reach Sydney before Monday. She spoke over the long distance telephone to Sydney. She is elated at her success and overjoyed at the way Australian people have taken her to their hearts. She was thrilled when she received telegrams of congratulation from their Majesties, also the Governor-General of Australia and the Prime Minister of New Zealand.
Miss Batten is eliminating Brisbane from her itinerary and will fly to Sydney via Longreach and Bourke. The London Financial Times says that Miss Jean Batten is engaged to a London Stock Exchange broker who is himself keen on flying. His name is not mentioned. He equipped her machine with the wings of his aeroplane. HELD AT BLACKALL TROUBLE WITH MAGNETO. (United Press Assn. —Telegraph Copyright.)' (Rec. 7.45 p.m.) Sydney, May 26. Miss Batten is held up at Blackall owing to magneto trouble. The escorting plane has gone to Brisbane. 600 miles, to procure a spare.
