ORPHANS’ CLUB
A PLEASANT PROGRAMME. The truth of the statement that man is essentially a social creature was clearly manifested at the Orphans’ Club on Saturday night when over 90 members and guests attended at the Orphans’ Hall. The evening passed pleasantly in music, song and story and it was with genuine regret that “Auld Lang Syne" was sung at the close of the programme. During the evening. the president, Bro. J. H. Reed, distributed gold service bars to brethren who had been club members for seven or fourteen years. Bros. E. Wren and C. Trim were each presented with one bar for seven years’ membership, and Bros D. Parry and W. A. Brown, as members of the club for 14 years, each received two bars. After the president had congratulated the recipients of these honours, several new members were welcomed to the club. The programme was again of a high order and the items were pleasing varied, a special feature being a talk on the French Horn by Bro. C. Gibbs. Bro. Gibbs explained the difference between the Right and Left hand horns and went on to trace the progress of this musical instrument from the simple animal’s horn of the ancients down to the beautifully toned metal instrument of to-day. At the close of his extremely interesting address Bro. Gibbs announced that much of his information on the subject had been derived from the late Mr F. Lillicrap, a past member of the club, whom he regarded as having been the finest clarinet player Invercargill has ever possessed. The details of the programme were as follows:—
Orchestra, Mardi Gras, march; song, Bro. F. Jones, “Five and Twenty Sailormen”; piano, First Movement Weber’s Concerto, Bro. H. accompanied by Bro. G. Lindsay; song, Bro. J. J. W. Pollard, “The Seige of Kazan.” Recitation, Bro. W. Buchan; orchestra, Hungarian Rhapsody; instrumental trio, “Norwegian Dance,” Bros. G. Lindsay, A. Hinds and A. Lindsay; talk, Mr C. Gibbs.
