BASKETBALL

SATURDAY’S GAMES RATA IN WINNING VEIN. MEDIOCRE DISPLAYS. After the bad weather prevailing during the week, the Southland Basketball Association were fortunate in having a well nigh perfect day on Saturday for the continuation of their weekly competition. Though the courts were dry no really good games were witnessed—either the cold wind, which sprang up during the afternoon, or the effects of the mid-week competition, robbing the players of their accustomed dash. In the first grade Rata secured a handsome win over Makarewa while Kiwi were defeated by Collegiate. If anything, play in the second grade was more interesting than that in the higher grade, Rata, Kiwi and St. Mary’s being the winners. Details of the games are as follows: FIRST GRADE. RATA (22) v. MAKAREWA (12). Excellent combination and a superiority in both centres and forwards were the decisive factors in this game when Rata emerged the winners over Makarewa by ten goals. With Rata’s centres in such good form the Makarewa forwards saw little of the ball and their scoring opportunities were few. COLLEGIATE (12) v. KIWI (4). This game opened very brightly, some good movements taking place resulting in Kiwi gaining a lead of one goal. This advantage they held for some 10 minutes, till the Collegiate girls began to assert themselves, making all the play so that by half-time the scores stood five goals to three in their favour. The second spell saw Collegiate defending strongly and to such purpose that the opposing forwards notched only one point in this half. Kiwi’s defence was not strong and the Collegiate forwards, kept well supplied with ball by their centres, were able to gain a substantial lead. SECOND GRADE. KIWI (16) v. COLLEGIATE A (11). These two teams were very evenly matched and a keen tussle ensued, a strong defence by Kiwi enabling them to gain the ascendancy. Neither team made much headway in the first spell, but the second half saw some really exciting play. At one stage in this spell the score stood 13—6 in Kiwi’s favour, but Collegiate then rallied and brought their total up to 10. Following this, however, Kiwi _ took command and went away to win by 16 goals to 11. RATA (15) v. COLLEGIATE B (9). A superiority in the centre third gave Rata the victory after an evenly contested game. Given plenty of opportunities by their centres the Rata forwards overwhelmed the opposing forwards in the second spell to gain a clear cut win. ST. MARY’S (27) v. S.G.H.S. (10). The scores are a good indication of the play in this game. St. Mary’s were too strong in all departments for High School and had matters all their own way. The winning team’s forwards played well against a weak defence and scored frequently. In the School team J. Lamont was a tower of strength working hard and to good purpose throughout. PIRATES (23) v. KENNINGTON (13). Playing on their home courts Ken.nington were defeated after a fast game by the good margin of 10 points. The winners played an _ attractive game, their centre third being especially strong and proving too much for the opposition. THIRD GRADE A. WALLACETOWN (18) v. KIWI (17). After an interesting game Wallacetown managed to win by one point from the visiting Kiwi team. The Wallacetown forwards were kept well supplied with ball by their centres, but lost many opportunities. The half-time score was only B—7 in Wallacetown’s favour and Kiwi, who were combining well in the forwards, might have averted defeat if they had been accorded more support by their centre-third. MAKAREWA (23) v. WAIANIWA (10). Playing on the Waihopai courts Waianiwa were outclassed by Makarewa. The winners had a strong forward’third and as a team played attractive basketball. McKENZIES (18) v. COLLEGIATE (6). Tire scores are a fair indication of the trend of this game, McKenzies proving too strong for Collegiate. Many opportunities went begging on both sides. THIRD GRADE B. ST. PETER’S (26) v. KENNINGTON (15). Playing on the Kennington courts St. Peter’s defeated the home team by a substantial margin. Kennington were handicapped by the absence of a shoot and their total suffered accordingly. Good combination prevailed among the St. Peter’s forwards and they goaled frequently. ST. MARY’S (11) v. PIRATES (7). Pirates had the better of the play in the first half of this game leading by 5—3 at half-time. In the second spell St. Mary’s took a new lease of life and went away to win by four goals. St. Mary’s centre third was in good form and gave their forwards many chances. The play of the Pirates’ forwards was patchy. FOURTH GRADE. MAKAREWA (25) v. RATA (12). Makarewa had an easy win after a rather uninteresting game in which they were superior to Rata throughout. Inaccuracy lost many points for Rata. WOOLWORTHS (8) v. McKENZIES (3). In the first spell Woolworths had matters much their own way against McKenzies who were handicapped by a weakness in the centre. In the second half, however, McKenzies took a new lease of life and play was much more even, both teams scoring two goals. The play throughout this match was willing, and interesting from a spectator’s point of view. COLLEGIATE (17) v. ST. MARY’S (2). From the outset Collegiate showed up well in this game and as the points indicate they scored a decisive win. St. Mary’s handling left much to be de-

sired and the team all round seemed to lack initiative. FIFTH GRADE. ST. MARY’S (8) v. ST. PETERS (7). Play in this match was even, but by no means of a high order—the handling on both sides being poor. St. Mary’s had a slight advantage in the forward third and it is to tins that their success can be attributed. RATA (12) v. PIRATES (11). This match proved one of the best of the afternoon, play being spirited throughout and at times of a very high order. The play of both teams was inclined to be patchy in the first half, but the second spell saw them playing a much improved game. Rata had a slight superiority in both the centre and defence. GREENHILLS (11) v. MAKAREWA (IDIn the first half Makarewa seemed definitely superior to Greenhills, but after half-time a noticeable improvement took place in Greenhills centre forward thirds, enabling them to draw equal. KIWI (17) v. COLLEGIATE (8). Though Kiwi were at a disadvantage in that they were a player short in both the defence and centre, they clearly had the better of the game. The Collegiate forwards were frequently caught out of position and did not show the same enterprise as the winners’ forwards.
