Swinburne wrote of Adah Isaacs Menken, actress and poet, “Lo, this is she that was the world’s delight.” The elder Dumas called her “My dearest love.” There was much mystery and romance about her, as we shall find recalled in a book which Bernard Falk has written, and which Hutchinson published on April 20. In the ’sixties she startled the town by appearing at Astley’s as Mazeppa strapped to a horse. On her death Swinburne is said to have been ill for days.
