DEFENCE VOTE

LARGE INCREASE RUMOURED. DENIAL BY MINISTER. (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, May 25. The statement published here today that the Defence vote this year would be increased by probably £500,000, was contradicted this evening by the Minister of Defence (the Hon. J G. Cobbe). The Minister said that the vote was not decided yet, and that, if there was to be an increase, it was not expected to approach, even distantly, the figure named. The vote last year amounted to approximately £283,000.
