MISS BATTEN’S FEAT

CONGRATULATIONS FROM THE KING. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) Sydney, May 25. Captain Bird, who is piloting Miss Batten’s escort plane, telegraphs from Newcastle Waters: “Very bumpy. For safety have decided against attempting to make Brunette Downs after dark. The courageous little lady considers this the worst flying country she has tackled and is tired.” The congratulations of the King and the Queen have been sent to Miss Batten through the Governor-General, who advised Miss Batten that he had received the following mesasge from the King: “Please convey to Miss Batten the congratulations of the Queen and myself on her wonderful flight.— George, R. 1.” . DELAYED BY WINDS FLIGHT TO BRISBANE. (United Press Assn. —Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Brisbane, May 25. Miss Batten arrived at Cattooweal at 5 p.m. after a difficult flight against head winds. She continues to-morrow to Charlesville, but has not yet settled whether she will fly to Brisbane, which will be determined by the flying conditions. A Sydney message says there is great disappointment that Miss Batten is unlikely' to reach Sydney on Sunday as elaborate preparations have been made for a rousing welcome led by the Aero Club which is providing an escort of many planes to the landing ground.
