CHAIN OF MISHAPS

HINDUS MEET WITH MISFORTUNE. SAPPHIRE’S “EVIL INFLUENCE.” (United Press Assn— Telegraph Copyright.) Calcutta, May 20. A chain of mishaps among well-to-do Hindu residents of Naghpur is ascribed to the evil influence of a beautiful sapphire. The sapphire was given to a Naghpur merchant who within three days, lost business orders worth several thousand rupees and was involved in a car accident. He gave the stone to a lawyer who, within twelve hours, was knocked down by a car. . , The sapphire was then given to an other lawyer whose wife died suddenly. It was left in the custody of the cook, who was severely burned when the kitchen caught fire. Two hours after it was again given away and the re cipient was thrown from his motor cycle while taking it home. The sapphire is now in the posses sion of a Parsee woman, and it is, believed that the evil influence has been broken now that it is not in the hands of a Hindu.
