SPEEDY AIRCRAFT

DOUGLAS MONOPLANES. FIRM TO BUILD IN HOLLAND. London, March 26. The Daily Express predicts that British and European air lines will be gravely challenged as a result of the Fokker firm having obtained a licence to build in Holland a fleet of American Douglas monoplanes. These machines are capable of attaining a speed of 213 miles an hour and cruise at 190 miles an hour. They carry 18 passengers. The average cruising speeds of aircraft now carrying most of Europe’s traffic are:—Britain, 95 miles an hour; France, 120; Holland, 143; and Germany, 152. A leading French aviation company is arranging for special invalid aeroplanes to operate between London and the Riviera. It found that dozens of invalids were anxious to fly to the Riviera, but this was difficult in ordinary machines since it was often necessary for them to remain in wheeled chairs or even on stretchers.
