BILLIARDS TITLE
NO DEFINITE ARRANGEMENTS. DAVIS IN A QUANDARY. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec 5.5 p.m.) London, April 6. Joe Davis denies the Melbourne Press cable stating that he is going to Australia on May 5 to play in the world’s billiards championship. He states that he has not made definite arrangements to go to Australia and is still uncertain whether he is going at all as he has still not obtained any concrete tangible guarantees or a suggested programme. Hence the whole project is still in the air. “Lindrum says he feels sure we would do well, but this is not definite enough to warrant incurring an expensive overseas trip,” said Davis. “I cabled Lindrum several times, but his replies never answer my questions. I do not feel like spending more money on cables. I do not know what course of action to take.” The Evening Standard says that despite cables to the Premier of Victoria it looks as though the world’s championship, if ever played at all, will simply be between Lindrum and McConachy. Davis retained the professional snooker championship, defeating Tom Newman by 24 games to 21. Tom Newman told the News of the World recently that as there was no guarantee from Australia even covering expenses Joe Davis was not likely 7 to compete for the world’s championship against Walter Lindrum. It was a pity, if true, said Newman, but business was business. If those on the spot were not prepared to give a guarantee Davis was entitled to refuse the risk of heavy costs for fares and hotels.
