PLUNKET SHIELD AUCKLAND ASSURED OF TROPHY FINE SCORE AGAINST CANTERBURY (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, January 9. Scoring 405 in the first innings in reply to Canterbury’s first innings total of 252, Auckland placed the destiny of the Plunket Shield for the present season beyond doubt to-day. Rain caused a postponement on the first day of play after eight minutes, Canterbury tlxen having five runs for no wickets. Continuing on the second day, Canterbury scored 252 and Auckland replied with 82 for one wicket. To-day the Auckland batsmen were well on top of the bowling and a fine innings by Whitelaw for 77 was followed with a century to G. L. Weir who showed a return to his old form. Weir hit 11 fours and two fine sixes, and then threw his wicket away. The colt Wallace and Cleave (Thames) were associated in a good partnership which yielded 71 runs before Cleave was run out. Both Bush and Matheson eventually sacrificed their wickets by hitting out. Canterbury made a fine start in the second innings, Kerr especially batting very confidently. NEW SOUTH WALES WIN BROWN’S DASHING INNINGS. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 8.15 p.m.) Sydney, January 9. In the Sheffield Shield match against South Australia, New South Wales in the second innings lost one wicket for 154 (Fingleton, not out, 58, Brown 83, Wendel Bill, not out, 10). Waite took one wicket fox- 53 runs. New South Wales won by nine wickets. Arthur Mailey, writing in the Sun, says that Brown’s fine form entitles him to serious consideration for _ the Test team. His runs were made in a dashing, confident manner against Wall and Grimmett, two of the leading bowlers. He lost his wicket to-day in trying to hit Waite out of the ground when the match was almost won and was stumped. In the first innings New South Wales made 273. South Australia’s scores were 246 and 177. TEST DRAWN INDIA AND M.C.C. TEAM. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) Calcutta, January 8. The second Test between India and the M.C.C. team was drawn. Faced with a deficit of 196 runs, India mainly through Naoomal’s confident. 43, C. K. Nayudu’s patient 38 at a critical period and Hussein’s plucky stand, managed to avert an innings defeat. Hussein, playing with an injured, hand, was the hero of the match with 59 and 57. With the exception of three dropped catches, the Indian fielding was good. Jardine’s fielding was brilliant. He caught five men in the two innings. . With twenty minutes left in which to get 82 runs and the light bad, the Englishmen did not attempt to get the runs.
