TO STAND TRIAL
AMERICAN METHODIST BISHOP.
SUPREME COURT’S RULING. (United Press Assn. —Telegraph Copyright.) Washington, January 8. The Supreme Court ruled to-day that the Methodist bishop James Cannon jun., prohibition leader, and his secretary Ada Burroughs must stand their trial on a charge of failure to report monetary contributions for the bishop £ fight against Mr Alfred Smith in the 1928 Presidential campaign. Bishop Cannon contended that the indictment was based on an unconstitutional law. While Bishop Cannon ostensibly objected to Mr Smith’s “wet” leanings, Mr Smith countered that Bishop Cannon’s objections were based on religious grounds also.
