SERIOUS FLOODS

DAMAGE IN SOUTH AFRICA.

(United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.)

Cape Town, January' 8. Colonel Reitz, Minister of Lands, made an aerial reconnaisance of the flooded south-west area. He states that the damage to riverside settlements is enormous. An endeavour was made to reach an island in the Orange River, but the motor boat struck a log and sank. The crew were rescued after 16 hours on a sandspit. The residents of the island were huddled feet to feet on dry land and in trees. The water is still rising.
