Mr John MacKinnon returned from the north by the midday express yesterday.

Guests at the Club Hotel include Messrs R. Burton and Ibbotson (Christchurch).

Mr Crombie Allen, of Los Angeles, who is visiting Invercargill, is staying at the Grand Hotel.

Dr A. J. Brass, of Invercargill, has taken over the practice of Dr J. N. Waddell, at Akaroa.

Sergeant Abel, of the Invercargill Police Force, is at present on holiday leave in Christchurch. Mr D. A. Macintosh, Inspector of Prisons and Borstals, who has been visiting Invercargill, left for Wellington by the early express yesterday. The Hon. J. A. Hanan, M.L.C., who formerly represented Invercargill in the House of Representatives, arrived on a visit to the city by last evening’s express.

Messrs W. McKitterick, W. Read and J. Strang, local bowlers, left Invercargill yesterday to participate in the Dominion bowling tournament at Dunedin.

Mr George Bernard Shaw and his wife will embark on a round trip to New Zealand by the Rangitane, according to a Press Association message from London.

A Press Association message from London states that Brigadier-General O. F. Phillips succeeds Admiral Sir Hubert Brand as first Aide-de-Camp to his Majesty the King. Mr P. C. Weenink, officer-in-charge of the Labour Department, who, with Messrs E. and C. Bowmar, of Gore, succeeded in climbing Mt Christina, in the Sounds district, during the holidays, has returned to Invercargill.

Mr W. J. McEldowney, the wellknown Wellington solicitor, left for Sydney en route to England by the Marama on Friday. Mr McEldowney's intention is to study for the Unitarian ministry, and ultimately to return to New Zealand. Mr A. D. Reid, of the firm of Messrs Henderson and Reid, Ltd., Gore, who has been on sick leave for the past year, resumed his active business yesterday and on his appearance at the Gore stock sale was warmly congratulated on his recovery. Mr L. Hassall, woodwork instructor of the Wanganui Technical College, has received an appointment as manual training instructor at the Timaru Technical College. He will take over his duties there at the beginning of next term. Mr Hassall has been associated with the Wanganui Technical College for some five years. Mr John Neill, Napier, for very many years secretary of the Southland Education Board, arrived in Invercargill yesterday and is staying at the Club Hotel. With him are his son-in-law and daughter, Mr and Mrs E. C. Inkster, who leave to-day for Stewart Islan '. Mr Inkster is accountant in the Wellington branch of the Bank of New Zealand.

Captain J. H. S. MacDonald, marine superintendent of the Mersey Paper Company, Ltd., of Liverpool, Nova Scotia, will arrive in New Zealand towards the end of this month to superintend the unloading of a big shipment of newsprint which is due in New Zealand in March. Captain MacDonald was a visitor to New Zealand last year on a similar mission.

Mr D. C. Marshall, of the railway traffic manager’s office staff, and Mrs Marshall left at the end of last week for Christchurch, to which branch Mr Marshall has been promoted. Prior to his departure Mr J. A. Lindsay, district traffic manager, on behalf of the staff presented Mr Marshall with a case of pipes and a piece of crystal-ware. His successor, Mr G. D. Smart, of Christchurch, has taken up duty.
