CONSIDERABLE CHANGE

BANKING RETURNS. A SOUND POSITION. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, January 8. A position of considerable financial strength is solidly shown in the returns of the six trading banks for the quarter ended December 31. The principal features, compared with those a year ago, are the marked increases in both free and fixed deposits, a substantial increase in note circulation and a heavy decrease in advances, while the banks’ holdings of Government securities at over £20,000,000 are double those of a year ago.
