CONSIDERABLE CHANGE
BANKING RETURNS. A SOUND POSITION. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, January 8. A position of considerable financial strength is solidly shown in the returns of the six trading banks for the quarter ended December 31. The principal features, compared with those a year ago, are the marked increases in both free and fixed deposits, a substantial increase in note circulation and a heavy decrease in advances, while the banks’ holdings of Government securities at over £20,000,000 are double those of a year ago. The principal movements disclosed by the latest returns, compared with those for the December quarter of 1932, are:— Increase. £ Government securities 10,029,661 Government deposits 317,245* Free deposits 3,535,020 Fixed deposits 4.144,624 Advances 6.851,479“ Discounts 369,709 Note circulation 349,775 Coin and bullion 365.142* ‘Denotes decrease.
