TEN LIVES LOST

RESULT OF BURST MOUNTAIN MAIN. (United Press Assn—Telegraph Copyright.) London, January 5.

A torrent of water, released from a burst mountain main between two lakes, struck the roof of the hydroelectric station which supplies Calmars (France). The roof collapsed, drowning ten of the occupants, including the supervisor, whose aged mother had just arrived to see him after a long separation. She was rescued. The wall of water which swamped the hydro-electric works threatens to ruin the lovely valley of Orbey. Three of the employees at the works managed to swim to safety. The remainder were trapped and overpowered. All the neighbouring villages have been evacuated. Snow and ice on. the roads are impeding the rescue parties.
