WINTON NOTES

HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

At a meeting of the committee of the Winton and District Horticultural Society, Mr D. B. Steven, a vice-presi-dent, presided over the following: Mesdames P. A. Bradley, F. Moore, D. W. McKenzie, H. E. Pearse, Messrs T. N. Eastlake, and W. H. J. Shaw. Arrangements were discussed in connection with the society’s autumn fixture. The following stewards were appointed: Receiving table, Mr A. A. C. Lion; cut flowers, Mesdames W. D. McKenzie, W. Henderson, J. R. Hamilton, J. A. Broom and P. Bradley; floral decorations, Mesdames J. F. Bromley, H. E. Pearse, and Mr W. H. J. Shaw; vegetables, Dr. M. Gow and Mrs J. P. McWilliam; produce, Mesdames F. Moore, H. A. Pierce, J. Raymond and T. Walker; photography, Mrs A. Gerrard; fruit, Mrs R. McDougall; farm produce, Mrs J. H. Thomson; school work, Mrs J. P. McWilliam. The appointment of judges was held over until a later meeting. It was decided that the produce stewards be appointed to take charge of the produce table and that exhibits donated to the society be auctioned at the close of the show. A resolution was passed deleting from the produce section of the schedule the words, “all pikelets, scones and gems to be made the day before the show.” Railway Returns. A substantial increase in the returns of the Winton railway station for the nine months from April 1 to December 31 is disclosed. A comparison of the figures with the previous year for the period quoted are as follows, the 1932 returns being given in parentheses: Passengers, 5346 (4675); cattle and calves, 774 ( 645); sheep and pigs, 87,834 (113,323); timber, 1616 tons (1561 tons); other goods, 39,808 tons (34,411 tons). Revenue: Passengers, £525 (£412); parcels, £331 (£289); goods, £lB,BOB (£17,086); total revenue, £19,799 (£18,047). Vital Statistics. The vital statistics for Winton and district for the month of December, with the figures for the same month in 1932 are as follows: Births, 3 (11); deaths, 3 (2); marriages, 1, (2). For the twelve months ending December the figures are as follows:— Births 57 (81); deaths, 28 (25); marriages, 16 (17).
