BLUFF NOTES

CARNIVAL COMMITTEE. (From Our Correspondent.) Miss Alice Simpson, of Dunedin, has been the guest of the Rev. and Mrs A. E. Waite at the Parsonage, Bluff, for the holidays. Other guests at the Parsonage at present are Mr J. S. Waite, of Dunedin, and Mr E. J. Sutch, A.R.A. N.Z., of Wellington. A meeting of the Carnival Committee was held in Mr H. W. Campbell’s rooms on Thursday evening, when his Worship the Mayor (Mr T. F. Doyle) presided over a satisfactory attendance of members.

Commenting on the carnival the chairman stated that its success had exceeded expectations and many eulogistic remarks had been heard from visitors to the town, particularly regarding the procession on Saturday evening. A special word of praise was due to the Haere Tonu Party, Mr Doyle continued, the members of which, with music and song, had broken the carnival ice in the first place and set all in a proper spirit for the occasion. The secretary (Mr G. V. Edge) endorsed the chairman’s remarks. The same speaker announced that the proprietors of Town Hall Pictures had generously offered to admit free to a performance all children who took part in the juvenile procession. General appreciation of the offer was expressed and it was decided that the three prizes won would be presented at this performance.

Mr A. E. Budd, who, with Captain R. Champion and Mr C. N. Crawford, had judged the grown-up and children’s sections of the procession, stated that owing to the all-round excellence of the entries the task had been a difficult one. The speaker detailed the qualities for which points had been awarded. The meeting voiced approval of the judges’ platings. The secretary reported that after representations had been made to the Railways Department, the latter had put on a carriage with the late goods train on each night of the carnival. Appreciation of this action was expressed by members. It was decided to send letters of thanks to Messrs Nichol Bros. and Messrs McGruer, Taylor- and Co. for donations of the cot cover and shawl respectively which were awarded for the two placings in the baby show; to Mr C. N. Crawford for supplying carnival posters free of charge; to Mr Campbell for free use of his rooms and to the two Bluff bands, the orchestra, Haere Tonu Party, lorry owners (who lent their vehicles free of hire) and others who had rendered assistance in various ways during the carnival. The balance-sheet, as produced by the secretary, showed that from the Watdrside Workers’ Band collection and carnival dance, funds to the amount of £l2 8/- had been raised. Expenditure totalled £2 7/-, leaving a credit balance of £lO 1/-, while it was understood a further small sum would be received later. After discussion it was decided to establish a fund for future carnival efforts. Messrs A. E. Budd and O. F. Metzger were appointed trustees and the chairman and secretary (Messrs T. F. Doyle and G. V. Edge) were empowered to operate the account. Speakers stressed the fact that with the experience gained, and the support assured the committee, a still more ambitious programme could be arranged for the next occasion and it was agreed to hold a public meeting later in the year with this end in view.

The final meeting of the committee was fixed for Thursday evening, January 18, when all matters in connection with the past carnival will be concluded. .
